PUSH UPS
I began not being able to do a single push up. Now I can do 20 (thats all I attempt), so probably a few more if someone was screaming over my shoulder to get my arse down & up & stop being a wussy girl. My long term goal is to stick it to my ex & do 50 right along side of him. So what exactly makes a person capable of doing push-ups? Is it the chest? Shoulders? Or does doing push ups everyday just make you able to do more?

It's more of a compound exercise, that uses chest, tris, shoulders. Strenght wise I would say it's primarily chest. Doing 50 will be endurance and the best way to train for it, is just to keep doing them.

Of course it's possible. But you have to make sure your diet and training supports that type of exercise.

Oh holy gosh Shibby. Pleae don't confuse me. I just got my whole diet/exercise routine sorted out. If the push-up's are a whole other concept, I might just make them a bonus if it happens.

I'm not sure what your set to do now, but just keep doing them and you will continue to improve. But if you want to trian for something specific you have to do that. Just like someone couldn't train to compete in a bodybuilding comp and run a 10k.

Are you doing standard push-ups...meaning, are you on your "feet" and hands or are you on your "knees" and hands, the "girlie" push-up?
I would say start by doing "standard" push-ups until failure..then do as many "girlie" push-ups as possible. You could also throw some "decline push-ups" in there as well. Declined push-ups have the feet higher than the rest of the body. Put your feet on the couch and do a standard push-up. It takes some of the weight off of the feet and adds it to the upper body, making it harder to do a push-up.

Iv'e just recently split chest & shoulders & now that I have only free weights & a bench to exercise with, i've only been doing bench press, incline dumbell presses & incline dumbell flys. Is that enough for chest?

my trainer and I were talking about this... there are more factors about doing push ups or even pull ups or even tricept dips...
it first comes down to your strength and your weight... if you weigh a lot it's going to be a lot harder than if you don't then it comes down to your strength I have always had an easy time doing these, I can do a lot no matter if I work on them or not. I am light weight and strong, so this is easy for me. Im a girl and I can do 100. I ususally don't try to go till I can't, but I'll do 100 at a time. |
