Dip Question---Vent post
Got a question for some people who do lots of dips. What is the proper technique for doing dips? Anyone got a picture? Here's the deal. I live in a town where there is a BIG Tyson chicken processing plant. Lots of Mexican's work there. Most illegal's but you can't make them leave so they're here. Anyhow, I have been working out with two of them at the gym. I was doing weighted dips tonight after blasting triceps on head bangers and push downs. I go down to the point to where the back of my arms, my triceps are parallel with the floor. If I go much lower than that, it seems to stress my shoulders and I have had many minor shoulder injuries. I try to avoid exercises that can hurt me. ANYHOW, after 3 sets of 10 with 70# on the belt doing dips, this meat head mexican comes up to the other two standing by me and starts rattling some shit off in spanish and laughing and pointing at me. RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. You know, I don't mind criticism, even if it is bad criticism I take it with a grain of salt. But to make fun of someone right in front of you and do it to where they can't understand it and when that person is hell of stronger than you, it just struck a nerve. Any thoughts?

You know, what bothers me the most I think is the fact that he was standing there making fun of me in front of his buddies in Spanish. I wish it was a law that you had to speak english. The next time I do deadlifts, I'm going all out when he is in there. I'll pull a good 550# and see what his skinny legs think of that.

I don't see howyou could be doing dips wrong. I'm sure there was some other reason he was laughing at you.

Don't go beyond a 70 degree range of motion from the shoulder joint or you will continue to have shoulder problems - depending on the angle of your body - parallel to the floor is probably too low...
As for your new friend, just grab his ass - I assure you he won't come around laughing anymore....

More thinking... I think that I do too much of that. I'm not pissed off at him anymore, he's just motivated me to lift harder and to show him up on anything he does. Usually it is a hot sexy girl that will motivate me, but this prick has really got me fired up.

Another thing about dips is whether you are trying to chest dips or tricep dips.

Have anyone ever been around people talking in different languages and you don't have a clue what they are saying. Sometimes you wonder if they are talking about you. I am smaller than this mexican meat head but lots stronger. I get the impression that he thinks he is a bad ass, but when I'm in there it makes him look bad as far as his ego goes. He told his buddy that I was doing my dips all wrong, he said that I looked like a girl doing them. In the gym you don't criticize or make fun of someone on how they are doing something. You ask why they do something a certain way and make a suggestion or suggest to try it a different way. I took it as an insult and worse it was in spanish to where he didn't think I would figure it out. Oh well. Maybe a phone call to INS would make him happy!
