Sciatic Nerve?!

OUCH! Has anyone here ever had a scaitic nerve issue before? Itis absolutely killing all of my lower body workouts and I want to somehow work around it or fix the stupid thing. No squats, DLs or even the lead sleds for me. I sometimes can barely walk and I get pain from above my right rear glute all the way down through my leg into my ankle and foot. I often feel numb at my big toe now. This sucks and doctors can't seem to find a formula to fix it. My chiro has helped it some but I need to get rid of this issue. Please.....any help is greatly appreciated.

My wife had this problem when she was pregnant. Of course it was due to the child growing in her and went away after the birth, but we were dicussing options with the doc just in case it didn't end after pregnancy. His first option was time and anti-inflammatories. He said it is rare for sciatica to become permanent. Anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months, and it will usually go away. Good luck Bro! I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Thanks guys. Sorry, I forgot I posted this thread while I was out of town, lol. This sciatic nerve thing has been going on for over a year now. It gets worse especially when I am physically tired. I'm not sure what caused it to begin with but I suspect that it really started when I atrophied after a sick period where I lost a lot of muscle mass in only a few months. Anyway, it gets in the way of lower body workouts and hurts like a MF if I try to run or jog for any distance greater than say, a block.

It starts above my ass, goes through the glute, then my hamstring and wraps around to the front of my lower leg, through the ankle and ends at the tip of my big toe, which becomes sensitive or numb. I'm trying to build my core more solidly so that my lower back doesn't pinch the nerve as it goes between my vertebrae.

PI, it sounds like your lumber spine is may be out of balance, I'd say get to a chiropractor first and learn how to pop your spine straight through hip twist adjustments. Then you probably should look at working on your core muscles more, I know it sounds silly but I've gone through periods where I've not bothered with lower abdoninal work, hypers etc and then picked up pains and injuries from seemingly nowhere, alot of it can come from imbalance in muscle tensions and limb muscles overpowering your core muscles.

plently of stretching also needed, not just hamstring stretches but thigh, lower back and lower ab stuff

the cause of sciatic pain is usually from the piriformis muscle, which is on top of the gluts, is pinching the nerve which can cause pain, numbness and tingling. stretching can often help this go away, also being a massage therapist i have had a lot of ppl come to me with this and i work with a chiro and the two seem to work pretty good together to relieve this problem

Thanks guys! Core muscles are definitely a priority right now. I have gone to a chiro (actually, a couple of different ones to be sure) and have had adjustments. Damn piriformus muscle! I'll let you know of any progress in coming weeks.

I have been struggling with a spine injury and it has gotten progressively worse - as a result my sciatic nerve has started to become irritated by it etc...

So....

My doctor has prescribed a small dose of Prednisone to see if it will help reduce the swelling in what he believes to be a bulging disk - I will let you know how it works (although from what I read I won't like the sides from the Prednisone BUT it's gotta be better than the pain I'm struggling to live with now)......

My next step is an MRI but I may have to fight with BCBS about my deductible - argggghh....

A bulging disk is nothing more than two vertebrae that have become stuck and don't move normally anymore. The normal movement of your vertebrae kind of massages the cartilage between them. The cartilage gets compressed pushing liquid out and then expands back pulling liquid back in. This movement keeps the cartilage healthy. When two vertebrae get stuck, the cartilage between them gets compressed, squeezing fluid out of it, but it never has a chance to expand. This causes the cartilage to bulge. A chiropractor can "unstick" the vertebrae and help train the muscles that keep your spine upright to pull evenly on both sides, helping to keep the vertebrae from getting stuck again. As the cartilage begins to expand again and fill with liquid, the bulge will go away.

Something about the "bulging" is supposedly placing stress on a nerve/group of nerves and the Prednisone is supposed to help ease this pressure (just as an fyi - I also have an allergy that we're trying to knock out with the same medication) - the reason that the doctor wants to do an MRI if this doesn't help BEFORE he sends me to a chiropractor is in case it is something more serious and the chiropractor needs to know about the issue before "working" on me...

That will certainly help. My chiropractor took xrays of my spine and sat down with me to explaine what he saw and what he was going to do.

Could be your SI joint. If your core is not strong enough to support heavy weights it will cause you lots of pain. Here is a good link with info about it.............
