When does your heart rate become too high?

I have started my cardio every morning on an empty stomach for 30 minutes on a stationary bike and every once in a while mix it up with the treadmill. My question is, I am 26 and apparently my target heart rate is around 130-135 from what I have read. I have a nike heart rate monitor and it says that my heart rate averages around 143. Is this bad?

You just need to back off on the intensity/pace until you're more accustomed to it - going too far over your target HR for fat loss ends up burning muscle if you're not careful (although you're most likely improving your cardiovascular capacity)...

To add to what Foghat said, your target heart rate depends on the goal you have set. If that goal recommends a THR 130-135 then do what foghat said. If it's fat burning then remember you need oxygen in your blood to oxidize fat cells. That's where that range comes from. But you will have to also include your breathing pattern at that rate. You want to try and take longer full breaths instead of shorter shallower breaths.

In theory: 220-your age= your max HR, and between 65-75% of that number is your fat burn zone and between 75-85% of that number is your cardio zone. So adjust your cardio intensity accordingly. :nerdnew:
