I do both when I do DB's...I don't do them much, and when I do, I use the straight bar.

Ok, so what are the advantages or disadvantages or using the bar in lieu of dumbells? Since you use the bar, do you go behind you or in front, and why?

I've always had a good back, as to why I don't do them much...Just like any other person...You tend to train harder in other areas that you're lacking...I tend to lack in the calf area, so I train them more...I personally like the straight bar shrugs because it feels great...I can put 315lbs and shrug away...I don't usually go heavier and no straps, just shrug until I can't hold the bar anymore...I go with the front...I did that back once and it felt weird.

Also; your traps are part of your back...When I do DL's, I can feel my traps get tight...I also do behind the neck PU's...This helps out a great deal with traps.

I use dumbells kind of between side and front. Its just kind of where they end up. About a degree angle to either across the front or at the side.

ughh.. db shrugs - let them hang naturally its how I roll, especially when using 40 pound dbs, those mothas are heavy

I am not big on training traps, but my wo partner is. I hit them pretty hard when rowing and hitting my deads.. but oh well I am a good little student, so John says

We did some trap exercise on the the standing calf raises machine last night.. not bad.

I love my traps, they are sweet
