Athletic Development

This is my believed doctrine of Athletic progression, even in the sport of fitness.

I agree with the progression, but I believe sport and weightlifting shold be interchanged. Some people may be more inclined physiologically to excel in a certain sport. But until the sport is tried, they may not know. I beleive starting in the sport, and then tailoring the program around muscle imbalances and sport specific training. Just my 2 cents though

I like it, but I would put gymnastics with sport in the pyramid. Gymnastics is very difficult.

Thanks for the input.

Sport being the ultimate goal, is placed at the top of the pyramid as in mastery of all tiers below and application of learned skills in competition. This would include any sport specific training. As is you transfer sports, the basics remain the same, only the direct goal and specialization changes.

Manipulation of your own body should not be difficult as a healthy human. It is a basic survival skill =-]

Maybe I should word it differently... It does not seem to flow very well.

Even with the sidebar of molecular nutrition - cardiovascular competance - manipulation of self - manipulation of objects - and finally sport... something seems to get lost in translation.

I suck at sounding smart aka converying my thoughts in concise and adequate writing.

Im more apt to throw a few, fucking do it... it works... itll beat your ass's in there.

I don't really disagree with you on any philosophic level. And I love to watch the crazy crossfit training. I might even try it someday. But as to "functional strength" the only thing more functional than a 600 lb deadlift is a 700 lb deadlift because when you are that strong it's all functional. Since I have been strength training everything is easier Kids, work, farm, sex, everything. The pyramid I am not sure about gymnastics but I think you kind of redefine that a little to mean physical manipulation I could agree with that. Maybe

how about,

muscle stimulation > feed the muscle > rest the muscle > repeat.

I wouldn't call gymnastics manipulation of your own body in a survival manor.

In earlier times: ducking down to avoid the spear thrown at your head= gymnastics.

THe mobility of your body is important.

This works. But I train people for soccer. The last thing I want them to do is bulk up like a bodybuilder. they would lose their quickness. So, like you said fitness is different from BB

Really depends. If you are increasing their body fat then yes I believe they would slow down. I play soccer and the only time I notice it is when my body fat gets to be around 12%. My weight can fluctuate by 20 pounds and my quickness stays the same as long as I stay fairly lean.

Even keeping their fat down, I notice a lag in their step. Some solid muscle is good, but turning a 170lb soccer player in 200lb soccer player will slow down their movement

I'm sure for some people that maybe true. I can play at 215 pounds and still be as fast as when I'm dieting for a show and I'm 25 pounds lighter. Not trying to argue just speaking from personal experience.

I completely disagree - I'm just as quick as I was at 170 and can still close in on or break away from pretty much anyone with a quickness most guys half my size can't even pull off - the only major issue I have is that at 240 my endurance isn't where it used to be but that's what subs are for (that or the breaks we're always getting for injured players I've accidentally left on the field )....
