Your calves are capable of taking high reps and high stress--perhaps more than any other skeletal muscle in your body. (Not counting the heart, etc.) For this reason, to get them to grow, you need a combination of high reps and high weight or you are not doing anything they are not already subjected to. Therefore, I would recommend keeping the reps to at least 12, and use weights as high as you can with that number of reps (of course). Pyramid the weight up to avoid a muscle pull or injuring a tendon.

Calves are definitely a hard muscle for some. I've notcied in training others that those who just dont seem to build any size need to jump on calves 5 times/week. Hitting calves with many sets at reps of 12-20 on leg day, and then the other 4 days during the week hitting 6-8 sets and going with 10-15 reps heavy. I have them switch machines daily to always hit a slightly different area. This really does work. Hitting calves just once or twice a week for most just wont work. 5-6 times/week will work great for most and will definitely increase size, muscularity and give more seperation and striations. Just my 2cc's. PEACE! KIR

The parenthetical phrase was not an exception to the previous sentence, but rather a further clarification.

LOL, never new a man who over trained calves. Arnold trained calves 6 days/week along with training rear delts 6 days/week. Problem areas! And areas that are EXTREMELY HARD to overtrain. Waisting your time? Never new someone could waste their time spending 10 minutes during a workout to hit 6-8 sets of calves. Your 10 minutes must be more valueable then others. PEACE! KIR

understand what i am saying:

SKELETAL MUSCLES are muscles that are voluntary, ie attach to the skeleton allowing for movement. These muscles include but are not limited to muscles such as the bicep and tricep, trapezius, latissimus dorsi, etc.

CARDIAC MUSCLE is involuntary and is found in one and only one place in the body: the heart.

understand?

I knew it before you stated anything. The only thing you have taught me is some insight into your personality.

Jackal, I would think that since most people are on gear, most people can EASILY get away with 5 days/week of calves. I didnt state SLAMMING calves 5 days/week. I stated hitting them hard with many sets and reps on leg days, and the other 4 days/week go with 6-8 sets. Many if your calves cant handle 6-8 reps/ed then you better sit in your lazy boy and hope you dont run into stairs anytime throughout the day. LMAOOOOOOO And Arnold being on MASSIVE amounts of steriods??????? What do you PERSONALLYYYYYY know about how many mgs/week he was taking? I personally would think was taking MUCH less then some of the people do now a days. Maybe do a little more experimenting in the gym and a little less reading and maybe you will find more ways to shock your body to grow. Just my observation of what your throwing out in the post. PEACE! KIR

If you knew anything about me, which you do not, you would know that I do admit when I am wrong. Let me make it simpler for you by making a similar comment dealing with another topic:

A Volvo is capable of taking high stress--perhaps more than any other automobile. (Not counting pickups, etc.)

Does that make it clearer?

JACKAL, calves are my forte. The best thing to remember is strict form. Regardless your choice of sets, reps., etc. Form is paramount, bro. If you're not wincing from pain on you last rep of any set you're doing with calves, then you're not doing strict enough form. I count 5 secs. during both adduction and abduction. Get the burn in the calves so you have to walk out of the gym as though you just crapped your pants. That's working your calves, bro. Pneck

KIR, thanks for chatting today. You're going to get that 600lb. bench yet. Hey, a snowblower ROCS! Man, I remember the day living back in WI. No thanks. I've shoveled my driveway x2 in 5 years since in OK.

Ya... send the pics of the calves. I need to see where mine are at in comparison. Thanks. Send them to pencilneck@cox.net though.
