Is doing the fitness routine in barefeet frowned upon? I've tried wearing shoes a few times and it's to restricting to my movements and uncomfortable. I just feel like I don't have enough contact with the floor and end up sliding around.

It's not frowned upon, it's not allowed. Too much risk for injury with out shoes. Bare feet will definitely increase the possiblity to slide around. How does shoes restrict your movement? IMO, I think it would make it easier, giving you more balance and core strength. Keep doing your routines with your shoes, and you'll get comfortable.
