A former Suffolk Police Department "Cop of the Month" was out on bail yesterday after he was charged with criminal possession of steroids with the intent to sell, police said.
Officer Steven H. Lepre, 43, of East Northport, had been on extended sick leave and assigned to the police department's medical evaluation section.
His felony arrest came after an investigation by detectives with the Suffolk Police internal affairs bureau and narcotics section, according to a news release issued by the department.
Lepre was arrested at 2:09 p.m. Saturday and was taken to police headquarters in Yaphank.
Suffolk police yesterday said they could not provide further information on the investigation, the health condition that resulted in Lepre's extended sick leave or the reason he gave for possessing steroids.
He was arraigned yesterday at First District Court, Central Islip, pleaded not guilty and was released on $2,500 bail. He is due to appear in court Friday.
The 13-year police veteran was suspended without pay.
Lepre could not be reached for comment yesterday.
His lawyer, Christopher Rothemich of Islandia, did not immediately respond to a telephone message left with his answering service.
In 1998, his second year with the Suffolk police, Lepre was named Cop of the Month for exemplary service after he and his Third Precinct partner revived a Brentwood man who had no pulse and who had stopped breathing. Lepre, who is also an emergency medical technician, worked with his partner to perform CPR on the unconscious man. The man was taken by ambulance to the hospital and was admitted with normal blood pressure and a strong heart rate.
In October 2002, Lepre was injured while chasing a man who was charged with breaking into a woman's home in Bay Shore while she was inside. Lepre followed the suspect over a chain-link fence and gouged his thigh, later requiring 130 stitches to close a wound.
