Bowl Record (4-5)
CLEMSON TIGERS -9.5 @ COLORADO BUFFALOES
Clemson (7-4, 4-4 ACC) at Colorado ( 7-5, 5-3 BIG 12) at 5:00 PM. EST *ESPN
GAME NOTES: The Colorado Buffaloes will clash with the 23rd-ranked Clemson Tigers in the Champs Sports Bowl from the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The Buffaloes will participate in their third bowl game in four years, and while that should call for a celebration, Colorado has had to endure serious issues on and off the field which could play a major factor in this contest. First and foremost the resignation of coach Gary Barnett will surely effect the outcome of the game for the Buffaloes, as defensive coordinator Mike Hankwitz will coach the team in Orlando. Barnett, who paced the sidelines for seven years in Boulder, was mired during the end of his tenure with off the field situations, along with on-the-field issues. As for the team in 2005, the Buffaloes started the year with a 7-2 ledger, however the squad was atrocious down the stretch, losing three straight contests, while being outscored a whopping 120-22 in those three contest. Colorado was able to capture the Big 12 North Division, but the team suffered an embarrassing 70-3 setback to Texas in the Big 12 title game. Overall in postseason play, the Buffaloes are just 12-14 in bowl games, however one of those victories came last season when the Buffaloes beat UTEP, 33-28 in the Houston Bowl. It was the first bowl victory for Colorado since the 1999 season when the Buffaloes hammered Boston College, 62-28 at the Insight Bowl. As for the Tigers, they opened their season with two victories before falling in their next three contests, which included a heartbreaking 36-30 loss to Miami in triple overtime. Clemson was able to break out of the slump and went on to collect victories in five of its final six games. Overall Clemson has a 14-13 record in postseason play, which includes a 27-14 victory over Tennessee in the Peach Bowl back on December 2nd, 2004. The victory over Tennessee last season was just the team's second win in a bowl contest since 1993. This will be just the second-ever meeting between the two schools, as the Buffaloes posted a thrilling 27-21 victory over Clemson in the Orange Bowl way back in 1959.
The Buffaloes enter the Champs Sports Bowl with an inexperienced quarterback at the helm and their coach of seven years gone. Defensive coordinator Mike Hankwitz should be able to handle the job, but too much has gone wrong for Colorado over the past month for the Buffaloes to have a chance at winning this contest.
