HD's suck. Use striping - RAID5 (n + 1) is best or RAID1 (mirroring) array. RAID5 redundancy out of 2TB about 1.6 usable, RAID1 lose 1/2.
If you want to get serious about it get a Buffalo NAS drive- 2TB = $299 to $1100 list I would get a Gigbyte ethernert

true. hell I have one pc that I've gone through 4 hd's ( due to failure) in the last 6 yrs. I also have another pc that I have had the same hd for 7 yrs.

What Bouncer said is true, but hd's are not made to last very long anymore. 2yrs out of routinely used hd is good (these days). I can't stress enough how important it is to put anything of importance on disc. Hard drives fail, that's a fact so why test the longevity with important data at the risk of losing it all.

chris, i have a separate hard drive used to back up stuff from my computer etc. after i back something up i unplug it and put it away. i think most failures come from people just keeping the damn thing plugged in all day spinning at 10,000 RPM etc. i have had an iomega extrenal hard drive that i have had for 3 years or so, no issue at all.
