Also important to point out that without those "grunts" we wouldn't have much of a military. Just want to be clear about that, I don't mean to use that term in a disrespectful way.

Seems like infantry may seem cool to kids coming in, but probably does not provide too many skills that translate to civilian life.

I had specialized training. SATCOM school is 50 weeks long where as something like infantry is 8 weeks. There are plenty of specialized jobs in the army but regardless of your job as an enlisted it always has that grunt/field lifestyle.Originally posted by Bouncer View PostThat's a movie deal right there bro!
Can't believe you haven't mentioned that before. Pretty crazy.
Yea, seems like with all of the other branches your kind of dispensable whereas with the air force your more of a specialist. Don't really think of a grunt when you think about the air force.
Comparing air force and army is like comparing blue collar and corporate. Generally speaking.

I would choose the Air Force simply because the quality of life for soldiers is so much better. I would also go the officer route not enlisted.
I got a lot out of the military; training, education, experience, leadership skills etc. I was a drug dealer and borderline drug addict that made a conscious decision to better my life by forced discipline and structure.
I was pocketing $3k a week selling weed and coke at 17; a big fish in a small pond. I was intelligent enough to know that my time was limited. So I took control of my life.
3 weeks into basic training my supplier got busted on a Friday evening; the day I always replenished my supply. He got 15 years for drugs and weapons; coke, liquid lsd, pot, a handful of grenades, a couple claymore mines, and a bunch of other unregistered guns. I would have been fucked!

Interesting. Which branch would you choose now? What was it about the army that makes you say that?
I think I would be an airforce type fella. I have all the respect in the world for every branch of Military but I don't think I would make for a good soldier in the same way a pitbull doesn't make a good police dog. It's not that they aren't capable, it's a question of not following orders because they don't make sense to me. I guess I feel like the airforce is a little more individual and that's where I would thrive. I'm not a great "Team" player if that makes sense. I realize there are still orders to follow no matter what branch but it seems to me it that it would be the best fit for me. Of course, having no experience with it, I could be completely wrong. lol.

Military? Yes. Army? No. Korea? Fuck no! Of course I had no choice about that duty station.

I know your glad you have that experience and it probably changed you as a person for the better but if you had to go back in time, would you do it again knowing what you know now?

I lived through a mudslide of equal or greater magnitude while I was in Korea. Whole mountainside disappeared. Spent 2 days digging out bodies of soldiers still in their sleeping bags.
