  • When Gyms Were Sketchy

Say what you want about the danger of what looks like one failed joint or weld away from sending hundreds of pounds to his neck...

But by god those old gyms had character. There was a charm back then about bodybuilding that has completely disappeared.

This is bodybuilding as it should be!

I have used those leg presses when I started lifting in my early 20s.

I remember something similar but not exactly that sketchy looking. Imagine if it tipped forward. Those plates are coming down on his chest, neck, and face.

The weights would go straight up and down. So think about when you are lying on your back on the floor and you bring your knees to your chest so your lower legs are vertical. That weight stack is coming straight down in line with your ribcage lol..... I think there were safety stops, but again, you are counting on them not failing. And there isn't even a way to dump the weights as they are on the pin. You've got to remove them one by one while somebody is getting their ribcage crushed.

Buncha youngsters in here. The weight will only go to the stop, you can see it just above his hand. But yea those vertical presses sucked.

I see people, mostly girls, doing these all the time in the Smith machine for glutes. Actually a lot more dangerous since they never set the safeties.

I think we know there was a stop you dick face. The point being, if one of those stops failed it's lights out.

That was American steel and the finest welding the local vocational school had to offer. It's probably still being used by true patriots.
