  • helpful info on shipping

as of lately i have been reading alot about ppl worrying about shipping. i have a cousin who is a UPS worker for 11 years, a friend who has worked in the UPS hub for 8 years and another friend who works for FedEx. since i was toying with the notion, i asked them some informative questions and they gave me true answers. i thought i would pass some of the knowledge along.

i was told both UPS and FedEx do NOT x-ray packages. i was also told that "UPS and FedEx are not in the business of catching illegalities, they are in the shipping business." they also said it is all about the packaging. if a box puts them (i.e. the building or employees) in the way of danger they immediately call local law enforcement. if there is a rip in the box, and it does not expose anything illegal they tape it up as best they can and send it on its's way. so once again, all about the packaging. the boxes do get thrown around ALOT. so using a heavier guage cardboard box is definately recomended. it might add a lil to shipping charges, but it guarantees a safer trip. any box emitting a toxic oder, leaking an unidentifiable substance will be place aside for a supervisor to determine what steps to take from there. be it calling local law enforcement or whatever. UPS nor FedEx are allowed to open a box without local law enforcement present. they also went on to say that the only way police will come looking for a box is if they are tipped off in advance. i was told it is 99.99% imossible to look at a box and determine what is inside, weather buy smelling or shacking or by what ever other means they have. my friends told me stories of seeing bullets falling out of a box one time. when local law enforcement showed up and opend the box it had hand guns and numerous rounds of ammo. he said, had the bullets not fallen out the box would have passed undetected. in other words, they are not looking for anything when boxes pass though the hubs. they are there to deliver the package, not make a case and try and find out what everyone is shipping they told me the companis couls care less what is in the boxes. at the end of the day it is all about money. they were paid to ship the box and deliver it is what they will do. but they will comply and coopertate with any law enforcement when it comes to "suspicious" packages.

so in the short of it, if you package your goods well, wrapped tightly if they are glass with plenty of padding, in a box that can withstand a good beating, cahnces are 99.99% of the time your goods will get through.

i hope this is not too informative. if it is then please take it down. if not, i hope everyone can use this info.

I've been working for loomis/dhl for 5 years now and "we" open any packages they look like they might cause a threat, which is a VERY low percentage. By "we" customs are more less the only ones that open any packages. As warehouse workers we only repack or tape what we have to. Although they are always customs inspectors randomly inspecting packages at there choice. Let me insure you though that this is very very low. I would say one in every hundred packages get opened up! Which leave you with very good odds that yours will be fine.

Well guys, thanks for confusing us, once again. LOL

I can't help but wonder though, do people on the "low end" of things. Suppose that all of this security stuff is kept under wraps from your every day employees to keep from this stuff getting out. The reasson, for example, is that alot of these delivery companies are not federal and they may not want people to know what they are doing, since the law is pretty specific and it may keep them out of trouble.
