  • I need chest injury advice....

I was benching today. 365 on the 3rd rep i felt a pain like a razor ran from my outer pec to about 1 inch before it ties in to the breast plate.Upper chest i might add.Its not black or purple so im sure its not a tear.it feels really tight and sore. Also my right trap is tight and sore, but it has been for about 3weeks.Should i take time off,and for how long? Its hard for me to stay away from the gym.Guess ill be pounding legs for a while huh?

my advice to you my friend is to not injure your chest.:D
but did you warm up enough? i'm guessing so since you were hitting 365. you say your trap was sore for a couple weeks. maybe the strain of the weight kind of travelled down? i would say take time off. only your body can really say for how long. next time if you feel up to working out your chest don't try to hit such a heavy weight until your trap and pec feel 100%. maybe stick with flyes and cable exercises, give the presses a break. if it isn't a serious injury then there's no reason to make it one.

Definately take some time off....and before you go back, I suggest seeing someone certified in Active Release Technique (ART) therapy. They will work on both the trap and the pec to get the tightness out; as you already know, tight muscles are easy to hurt. To find a therapist in your area, look here:

Yep, what the hitman said. . .ART works wonders. . .I would definitely take the time off and just do some light work on chest with cables for a pump and maybe some light chest press machine. . .get it looked at!

i think you should treat your injury seriously and unless it completely clears away in a week, go see a pro about it. small injuries tend to cause big ones

Hey GS, These guys are giving you some good advice and I would tell you to take their advice. Eight years ago I tore my right pec. Laid off chest for 3 months went back to chest and trained for competition and won 4 out of 5. On Sept 30th I tore my left pec-major 3 minor veins the main leader vein from my chest to my left arm, connecting tendons, all muscle and tissue. I was put into a semi coma for 7 days in the hospital and lost 3 pints of blood into my chest cavity. I went back to the gym after 6 weeks and did my own rehab- with a sports medicine doctors direction. All parts of my body are strong and as big as ever. My chest is gone I will never bench heavy again. I did bench Sat. and hit 225 and that will be my goal is to stay at 225 and never power lift again. So take some advice go slow and seek help from a professional doctor that understands a lifters mind set. Be safe and think!!!! Springman/Preacher
