  • A test for human growth hormone could be secretly implemented...

CANBERRA, Australia - A test for human growth hormone could be secretly implemented in time for the Athens Olympics to catch cheaters unaware of the new exam.

Australian Sports Drug Agency chief executive John Mendoza said Thursday the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Olympic Committee (news - web sites) were confident of introducing a test for hGH before the Olympics begin Aug. 13.

"Athletes should be aware that a hGH test could be implemented at any time — and this implementation may not be publicly announced by anti-doping authorities until it is too late for athletes illegally using growth hormone," Mendoza said in a statement.

Mendoza said tests developed last year to detect the steroid THG proved that even the most sophisticated performance-enhancing substances were detectable.

"This development is a wake-up call to athletes who think they can use supposedly undetectable substances with impunity — this is simply no longer the case," he said. "The gap between the anti-doping agencies and well-organized cheats has closed dramatically over the past few years thanks largely to coordinated global investment into finding better substance-detection methods."

Mendoza said samples taken from athletes at the Athens Games would be stored for two years and could be subject to further analysis if new tests to detect performance-enhancing drugs were developed. The penalties for positives in those cases can be imposed at a later date.

It talked about being able to test for THG now. Isn't that only becuase they know what to test for. I'm sure there are and will be designer GH if needed, and then what are they going to do.

        Bounce. .good post. . .
I am sure that most will agree with me when I say that I would prefer to watch the "geared to the hilt olympics" I don't see what the whole bruhaha is all about.. .I personally think that gear, Gh, etc. is the next step in evolution. much like drugs are keeping us alive longer, others are helping us go faster and higher etc. . .humans were given a brain and we have used it to develop out bodies and performance to a higher level. . .if everyone is allowed to use whatever they like then it is an even playing field again. . .
on the topic of testing there will always be people who beat the tests and hundreds of new drugs come out each year. . .so they will never be able to test everyone for everything, therefore making it a waste of time.

Yea but it's a global competition, so for a fair competition, alot of countries will have to break more laws to get there athletes up to par.

Sorry shibs. . I was saying if it was just made legal then it would be a level playing field. . .I know it is not legal at the moment but they should just drop all the false pretenses (ie. Mr. Bush who like to make it look like he is cleaning up America as well as the Olympics when he is not even putting a dent in it. . )
and let everyone compete on the level playing field that it would create. . .no wonder Canada never freakin medals in the olympics because we are dumb enough to actually do random drug tests and really do implement stringent testing. .not just on the days of the olympics but during the offseason as well. . .oh well, at least bbuilding is not in the olympics and I hope it never is!
            :)

Someone else said this already but the only reason they were able to detect it was because someone sent in a sample of it, if it wasn't for that they would still have no idea about it.
                Special test my ass.

I could not agree with you more. It would be more of a level playing field if everyone was allowed to use everything available to him. As it stands now the cheats have a great advantage. As long as antidoping exists there are going to be cheats who want an unfair advantage. Bodybuilding today is more exciting and competative than it ever has been and there are no illusions that some have an unfair advantage because they are using steroids or GH or anything else.

And Shibby I could not disagree with you more. I could care less about the morons that abuse any drug and kill themselfs on something as safe ephedra. There have been more deaths in the same time frame from asprin than there has been from ephedra. I have never believed in government legistlating my safety fuck them I am an adult and I dont need someone to take over parenting me. I think all the the idiots that want out of the gene pool (as long as they are adults.) should be helped along by making all the tools available to them including narcotics.

Also if everyone was allowed to use then the playing field would go back to the genetics issue... those with better genetics would win... not just those who can get away with it...

Tetrahydragestrinone. Its a synthetic steroid developed a few decades back and then forgotten about. Recently BALCO laboratories figured out how to make it and distributed it to dozens of athletes. Since the authorities didn't even know it existed, there was no way to test for it until a whistleblower sent the IOC a sample.
