  • capping powders: A how to for low potency caps

Many supplements are cheaper to buy in bulk powder form but how do you cap a powder like M1T where you only want to make a 5mg cap?

I use potato starch as a filler. It is a nice fine powder that mixes easily.

    1) Fill ten #1 gel caps with just starch and weigh them. Weigh 10 empty gel caps. Subtract the weight of the 10 empties from the weight of the 10 starch filled ones. Divide this number by 10 to get the average weight of starch that will fit in a gel cap. In my case, that was 369.2 mg starch per cap (no tamping, used a capMquick capper).

    2) So, the ratio of M1T to starch should be 5:364.2 or 1.37% M1T in starch. Now, If I want to make 100 caps at 5mg M1T per cap, I want to mix 36.42 g starch and 500 mg M1T. The way I do this is to place both components in a 1 gallon ziplock bag and blow the bag up with air like a balloon. Now shake the bag vigerously for 5 minutes. The contents are now uniformly mixed. Pour the powder/starch mixture into your gel caps (capMquick) and now you have 5mg gel caps.

I analyzed 10 random caps made in this manner and the error in weights was within 4% with one out-lier. In no case was a cap more than 10% off.

I used M1T as an example but identical methods can be used to make caps of any powder at any dosage. I have made 5mg M1T caps, 2 mg M4OHN caps, and 8 mg M4OHN caps.

Starch shouldn't go bad. Shit, I have stored it in the box on a shelf for years without any change in smell or appearance.
