  • AAS and their effect on the immune system - Thoughts please

I have read that AAS can effect the immune system, does anyone have any study evidence of this, and does it depend on what type of AAS you use?

I have read studies that claim nandrolone and testosterone increase T-Cell response. This would make for a stronger immune system. Without doing the PUBMED search again, I can't give you the citation (and I am much too lazy, LOL). Just do a PUBMED search under steroid and immune system or testosterone and t-cell. It should be in there somewhere.

well based on my ancedotal evidence of just myself, I always get more sick on cycle. I have been off for two months now and I feel wonderful (finally). But that is just me talking, it could have been other factors.

I was on for 2 years straight and I got sick about once every 2 months. Been off now for about 3 months and havent been sick once. Thats all the evidence I need.

Same here. I get sick when I am off. But when I am on I have yet to get sick. (I probably jinxed myself for next cycle.)

Immunity defiately gets suppressed while 'on'. Sometimes I wonder if the AAS are suppressing the immune system directly, or is the body just worn out and more succeptible to getting sick due to the rapid growth.

Your immune system is weakend when on anabolics. For instance when thinking about having laser surgery on my eyes one of the questions asked was have you been taking steroids or something else and the reason behind that was because it could cause slower healing through a weaker immune system.

Not to mention like everyone else has said, the evidence is in front of our eyes, I always get sick when on AS and not much when not on.

I would not say that your immune system get weaker but I do think that a lot of guys that train don't train half as hard when off as when they are on. . .also, if you are 20-30 lb heavier lean tissue. . .it would stand to reason that oyu need way more glutamine and other immune system boosters that your muscular system is now eating into a lot more. . stuff like glutamine gets used by the gut, the immune system and the muscular system. . .personally I have not been sick with the flu or any other common cold for a LONG time except now that I am living in northern ontario and it gets to 35 below and my heater conks out in the car. . .:) I did have shingles when I started dieting for my last show and that was no fun but that is related to stress.
keep takin those vitamins. . .
                      :D

I have to say that I had not been sick for a year, and then did a 14 week cycle. Now that I'm off (2weeks) I'm now sick, so I think it does affect the immune system.

Actually being in a anabolic state and taking vitamins like e and c right after workout actually makes your immune system stronger. Technically, when your on your T cells are higher and CPK's are lower, meaning stronger immune system. But you still have to get rid of free radicals during and most importantly after your workout. I am sure Spidey can shine somelight on what I just said.

                            steriods

some steriods actually strengthen our immune system. The downside is taht your body may become reliant on the steriod to spike your immune system , thus bypassing its normal function....As such, while on steriods, you need to eat right, take plenty of C & E, drink plenty of water, and get plenty of sleep.......

Actually any aas that makes you anabolic is going to improve tcells and decrease CPKs. So with this said I think all aas have an anabolic effect so all anabolic steroids improve immune function, not just some.
