  • Customs officers camping

I had a scare yesterday. I had just finished a workout and was getting out of the shower when the doorbell rang. I quickly got dressed and went to the door and woe and behold two customs agents are standing outside my place flashing their badges at me.

As it turns out they want to use my back yard to spy on a neighbor who they think is up to no good. I've agreed to allow them to do so as I was too afraid of what they might do if I said no. I really haven't brought anything into the country past customs in several months, so I don't think they have a reason to suspect me of anything.

Have any of you guys ever have a weird situation like this before where customs practically move in with you so they can spy on others?

I've already warned a friend of mine to be carefull what he brings over to my place or says to me over the phone or email in case I'm being watched myself.

my answer would have been a big fat no and then a call to my lawyer to make sure no reprucussions happen from a refusal.

Needless to say I'm a tad bit nervous as well.

I think I played the best poker face I've ever played when they were asking me questions.

I thought about warning my neighbor when I saw him picking up his mail this evening. But if I warn him and he gets busted, could I be pulled into it as an accomplice? I'm just one search warant away from being busted myself.

My neighbor was busted a couple of years ago for trafficing marajuana. Chances are Customs suspects him again.

I'm a small fish in comparison.

so are they moving into the backyard or hanging out in your house?
i haven't ever had this happen to me myself, but have heard of similar situations... it's definitely odd, keep us informed of what happens! and don't leave any donuts lying around, they might be confiscated as evidence.

Actually they asked for permission to hang out in my back yard to spy on my neighbor. They haven't stepped into the house. I don't know what happens when one of them drinks too much coffee. Will ask to come in and use the toilet or if they will just piss in my back yard?

They also claim that they would mostly be using my back yard at night, after I've gone to bed. That's comforting. Although I've given them permission I doubt they have done a single stake out yet. I haven't seen anyone since I gave them permission. They did claim they would be very quiet as to not wake me, so I really don't know.

I'm hoping that they have moved on. It has been really quiet at my neighbor's house for some time now and I told them as much when they were questioning me. I don't think there is anything Customs can see w/o some sophisticated servalance equipment and they said they would just be monitoring traffic flow from my neighbor's house. In fact I don't think my neighbor is living there right now. I think he only comes by to water the plants, feed the dogs, and pick up the mail.

                    see your lawyer

while it was nice of you to allowed them to come on your property, they will can now take judical notice of any illlegal activity involving your house. When they asked if they could set up shop in your back yard, you should have demanded a date certain for them to leave ... Right now you don't know if they are on your property or not and for how long. Very dangerous situation.... discuss with a lawyer and get some advice. If you challege them now you will bring attention to yourself.

I recieved a call this morning that they were going to be on my property today. Sure enough when I went to leave for work there was a strange SUV parked by my car port. I didn't see any one, but they could have been hiding in the vehicle or in the back yard.
