  • The Media..

Its kind of funny to me how the media works. Im sitting on my sofa today watching football and this anti-steroid commercial comes on. Telling people not to ruin there lives and so on. And thats fine if they want to make that commercial, I have nothing against it. But what I did have a problem with is this. The very next commercial was a Anheuser-Busch commercial with nice music and snow and horses, people signing christmas songs and so on. I was just sitting there thinking to myself, "what the hell is wrong with this picture". Alcohal has ruined more lives and killed more people in 1 hour then steroids ever have in there existance. I find it odd that we glorify an alcohal company with nice pretty commercials and yet at the same time we air a commercial about steroids that pretty much says, "if you use them you will ruin your life and maybe die".

What is going on people? It truly is insanity.

            the website is steroidabuse.gov...

my axe to grind with the US government, which I tried to voice a bit with the DEA bust, is that they are leading a campaign of misinformation, trying to pull the wool over our eyes where AAS is concerned. If I have everything correct, the criminalization of steroids grew partly out of the concern of UG labs creating products without any safety standars, and rising rates of counterfeits...fair enough, I don't have a problem with that.

What I don't like, however, is the apparent disconnect between what we -- the public -- see, and what we are told by our government. If steroids are so bad, why are they so popular? Why aren't all the major league baseball players experiencing stunted growth, or cancer, or heart attacks? Why do so many olympians test positive if they don't even give you increased performance?

In none of the ads that I have seen does anyone, even ONCE say that there is a promise of increased performance with steroids. Instead, we have to learn this from Jose Canseco. When he opens up his mouth, he's crazy, and when he writes his tell-all book, he's just trying to make a buck. Certainly Ken Caminiti would agree that his body was built with the help of AAS.

These ads give us no chance to sit and talk with the more impressionable members of our society on why people do steroids. There IS a temptation to do them. That temptation, and the promise it brings -- a promise that has been fulfilled with many an athlete -- is real for many people, but needs to be weighed against the drawbacks.

The first drawback is that they are illegal, punishable by time in jail...fair enough. Beyond that, details get a bit murky. I've been sitting in my car, at the desk, on my couch listening to these trials against Merck, the manufacturer of Vioxx, about deaths related to Vioxx use, and here I think "damn, that's a dangerous drug"...where is the steroid-like stigma with Vioxx? Or better yet, why clump every single steroid side-effect known to man and present it as the due consequence of every cycle, as the ads say? As one of my professor friends would probably say, "this decreases the overall sum total of our intelligence"

I'm not saying "disobey the government," or "go do steroids." In fact, you probably shouldn't. However, scare tactics and inflated consequences are not the way to get the message across. These ads are poorly worded, and reflect an unwise stance by the government of telling us "they're bad -- end of story" The authorities need to come clean and allow steroid use to be discussed in the open so that the public can be better informed, instead of being fed these one-sided statements.

            Sorry for the rant...

i seen that commercial too last sunday when i was watching the redskins game. first time i'd seen a commercial directly talking about steroids.... i can't believe that the feds are focusing this much attention on AS. all you here about anymore is the so called "problem" in the US of high school age kids abusing steroids. i mean hell i havent been outta school that damn long and out of my high school i bet there was no more than 2 or 3 guys using AS out of around 2000 students... there was MANY kids at my high school that were abusing street drugs and alcohol though, and it didnt seem like anyone was doing anything to stop that... here's what i think about all the media attention that has been giving to steroids lately. i think that the DEA realizes that they have lost, miserably, the "war on drugs" when it comes to basic street drugs so they're focusing their attention on another area now, steroids, to make it look like they're actaully doing something in the world. that's why you read all these inflated claims about how extremely bad steroids are on the body, just so that the feds can make it look like they're taking the worst poison out there off the streets. that's just my 2 cents....

I think the US gov. thinks that this is a battle they might be able to actually win against drugs so they are targeting the slim majority of AS users and highly publicizing it.

Here in Canada are big problem is Meth and they are restricting the sales of anything with pseudoeffredrine.

I agree with bouncer on the fact that booze causes way more problems than anything.

It is the nature of this culture

It is the American culture to require a boogeyman to rally the
herds against, a standard political trick.

We live in a country where anyone could ostensibly be president
and as such it is a highly politicized climate that includes many
factions and groups that even more highly politicize the result.

Boogeymen are singled-out, grossly-exaggerated "threats" that
the political forces and media can demonize.

It is a shame that something as profoundly useful as what this
board evinces and what saved my life have been used for
purposes that are grossly wrongful to people's ability to
                        achieve and reach higher heights.

I do not hold out much hope for change in the U.S. It is a *very*
                        young and immature country.

I am not going to touch this one with a 10 foot pole, if anyone cares to read my rants about steroids, the media, and our current state of public health, just search for Puma and knock yourself out. :)

However, this statement below is incorrect. They can make money off it, they can tax whatever in the hell they feel like. They tax tabacco and alcohol; if they wanted to they could make steroids legal and tax them as well. We have a long history in this country of taxing sin, the public would not bat an eyelash if they decided to tax certain classes of drugs (especially steroids).
