    The latest studies examine testosterones effect on mesenchymal cells or for simplicity sake, stem cells. Two lineages exist in which one of these stem cells can become a part of. The myogenic lineage will result in fusion with adult muscle cells to increase muscle mass, receptors, and nuclei. The other lineage, adipogenic, will result in the formation of an adipocyte (fat cell). These stem cells have many androgen receptors on their outer membranes and signaling of these receptors induces progression towards the myogenic lineage and blocks progression toward the adipogenic lineage. So in this case testosterone is working like an anti-growth factor for fat cells, and a growth factor for muscle cells.

    When a person loses fat, the typically do not lose fat cells, the cells simply shrink in size. It is a misconception that people think that by undergoing liposuction and removing the fat cells that it will be easier to keep the weight off. This is not true in the long run. In short gaining it back right away will be harder, but those same fat cells you had before will be replaced by stem cells creating new fat cells. So what would be a good way to keep that number down? Using androgens to block the formation of new adipocytes. It works the same way as muscle, the more adipocytes you have the more the easier it is for them to grow.

    It is believed when dieting that ghrelin may be responsible for upregulating adipogenesis resulting in more adipocytes. So one could postulate that inhibition via testosterone could increase the effect of dieting as well as decreasing the rebound effect.
