  • Bodybuilding then and now? Drugs Diet and Training...A discussion

This post was made by Massive G over at Muscle Mayhem. He brings up some damn good points and I agree with him 100%.

Let's ask ourselves this, Dianabol was released in 1956, so no one before that time could have used it. Prior to that it was testosterone only, and it wasn't around until the mid 1930's as that's when it was first chemically synthesized.

I have heard rumors as well that Grimek and Reeves were on Testosterone and B-12. RUMORS. Nobody has facts.
What if these guys took AAS back then?
It sure wasn't in the monster doses we see today or the combinations of all the secret drugs.

Maybe their secret was good wholesome food (raw vs processed milk cheeses creams) hard basic training and work in the gym and in life with a little sauce.

What's really changed between today and then?
I think it's interesting for the most part that the same type of diets they used then are the more popular ones like Palumbo's today. We of course don't have the same types of foods as our iron agers because they aren't available, that is the milk creams eggs and meats are different these days and well with the milk and cream product it does make a difference. The guys supplemented with supplements that were closer to real whole foods and not commercialized flavored powders with fancy labels that are questionable in content and purity for the most part.

    The diet-

"VINCE GIRONDA’S "HORMONE PRECURSOR DIET" FOR MUSCLE BUILD-UP
Gironda recommended this diet for four to six weeks, followed by a mostly vegetarian "alkalinizing" diet.

    Breakfast
Vince’s special protein drink made of 12 oz half and half, 12 raw eggs, 1/3 cup milk-and-egg protein powder, 1 banana. (Make one to three mixtures of this formula and drink throughout the day, between meals, and before retiring)

    Supplements

    1 multi-vitamin tablet 3 vitamin A and D tablets or 3 halibut oil capsules 1 vitamin B complex
    1 vitamin B-15 tablet 1 vitamin C comlex (300 mg) 2 vitamin E capsules (800 iu)
1 zinc tablet 1 chelated mineral tablets 5 alfalfa tablets
10 kelp tablets 3 tri-germ and wheat germ oil capsules 1 RNA/DNA tablet
    3 Lysine tablets
(400 mg) 1 hydrochloric acid tablet
    (before meal)
3 digestive enzyme tablets (after meal) 3 multi-glandular tablets
    (nucleo glan male or female)

    Lunch
1 pound hamburger or other meat
Mixed greeen salad or raw vegetables

    Supplements
    1 iron tablet
    4 calcium tablets
Repeat of breakfast vitamins with omission of vitamin E, tri-germ, wheat germ, halibut oil

    Dinner
1 to 2 pound steak or roast meat
Raw or steamed vegetables or salad and cottage cheese

    Supplements
    Same as lunch

    Special Supplements
10 amino acids and desiccated liver tablets (every 3 hours) 5 yeast tablets with the protein drink

4 raw orchic tissue tablets (before and after workouts)

6 each of the following before retiring: arginine, ortithine, tryptophan, calcium tablets"

Drugs have changed for the worse too, other than the new fronteir of slin and GH and IGF-1 (not the research stuff everyone sells I am talking about the amount produced from training and the slin and GH) steroids are far less pure and potent than they were before the gov't removed legitimate supply from the market.
I have wanted to say this on the open boards for some time now, but don't want to get everyone's panties in a bunch. There's a reason guys blew up on 10-15 mg of dbol a day.
these days guys are popping 50-75 mgs of methanodrostenolone (generic D-bol) a day like candy.

yeah it is but nothing new, not many people make the effort to buy genuine aas from foreign countries, people generally rely on underground labs and goodness knows how they breakdown.

other than that people are lazy and pop pills rather than train hard

Raw eggs? Isn't that a waste since they say you have to cook eggs to get the protein benefit? Also, as far as the lower doses of aas's are concerned, yea we go with higher doses these days and they didn't then, but they were also just starting to experiment with them. They didn't have the years of knowledge like they do now. Probably why guys these days are a lot bigger. Competively you need to be 250+ these days, in arnolds day, 225+ was good to go.

I think back in the day, genetics mattered more than they do now.

you don't have to be sure about it, its a fact :D.....I think diet is the biggest thing but a lot of it isn't the fault of the lifter...processed foods are stripped of everything. I believe a lot of what that one guys infomerrcial says, Kevin Trudeau. I think if people started eating fresh things and quality food you would see loads of improvments. I always get frustrated because I KNOW how to get there I am just to damned lazy to do it, lol. If I can put together just 2 good weeks of eating I see a huge difference...now imagine if I could do that over a 6 month period. I don't use many drugs (at least I don't think). 200mg Tren/200mg Mast/250mg of test right now. and I know in my heart that if my diet was on key I would be banging some size on. but again I think the food quality has gone to the shitter and I am not supporting the whole "organic food movement" but I think processed food has given made us need to eat more of less quality.

When I read about arnolds training with his buddies back in the day, they made it seem like it was something they looked forward to everyday, that they enjoyed being there more than anywhere else. These days, it almost seems like a chore and guys are always looking for the easy route so they don't have to workout as hardcore as they used to.
