  • Roger Clemens tape may prove his innocence.

(CBS/AP) Roger Clemens' former trainer said he was willing to go to jail and repeatedly asked the pitcher "what do you want me to do?" during a 17-minute telephone conversation last week.

A recording of last Friday's conversation between Clemens and Brian McNamee was played Monday at the start of Clemens' news conference. Clemens' lawyers said that because McNamee didn't deny Clemens' claims that he never used steroids, it amounted to proof that Clemens was telling the truth.

"I'll go to jail, I'll do whatever you want," McNamee said during the conversation.

"I need somebody to tell the truth," Clemens said.

Sounds like this trainer is being pressured by the government and may be making things up.

If this guy recants and says the government encouraged him to lie, it will no doubt help Barry Bonds; it will cast doubt on the credibility of the government's mostly circumstantial evidence...and will make the argument for malicious prosecution that much easier.

My credibility is strained here for the following reason.

If Clemens needed a lidocaine nerve block, he would definitely need experienced assistance as that's a difficult technique to self-administer. You really need to be able to see what you are doing and have a good angle, as it's a "fanning" technique that involves essentially multiple stabs with the same needle while it is still in the original hole.

If Clemens wanted to inject test and HGH, who really needs another person's help for that? So the fact of a trainer injecting him actually makes far more logical sense if he's actually telling the truth.

The thing that sticks out to me is that the trainer brought up that his 10 yr old kid is dying.

This is the way I see it. Like Bouncer said it sounds like the government is pressuring this guy to name names. The trainer was told by the gov't that if he didn't give names he was going to jail. Then they told him if he lied about the names he would go to jail.

Now his child is dying. Clemens wants him to tell the truth. If he does tell the truth he may go to jail and his child will die while he's in jail.

            That's my 2 cents.
