A 34-year-old bodybuilder who used marijuana to increase his appetite got a conditional discharge yesterday for possessing 452 grams of the plant.
Robert Armstrong moved to Peterborough in March. On March 18, his girlfriend discovered drugs in a basement beer fridge, federal prosecutor Chris Corkery said, along with growth hormones and anabolic steroids.
The girlfriend called police and Armstrong told officers the marijuana was for his personal use and he was using the steroids to train for a bodybuilding competition.
Marijuana increases appetite allowing a bodybuilder to consume more food and optimize steroid use, court heard.
Normally police lay trafficking charges when dealing with such quantities of drugs, but this was an exceptional case, Mr. Justice Robert Graydon said.
Graydon gave Armstrong a conditional discharge and nine months probation after Armstrong donated $1,000 to Kawartha Food Share.
