WHITE HOUSE (AP) - President Bush wants the Senate to quickly approve an international agreement to fight the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sports.
The International Convention Against Doping in Sport was drafted under the U.N. and has been ratified by more than 70 countries. It urges nations to promote anti-doping controls for international competition, like the Olympics and Pan American Games.
The White House says the agreement's principles are already reflected in U.S. law and policy. Officials say ratifying the agreement will solidify the country's place "as a leader in the worldwide effort to rid athletics of cheating through chemistry."
While the convention doesn't cover professional sports, the White House says professional leagues should use it as a guide to strengthen their anti-doping policies.
