    High school athletes from Lee and Collier counties won't have to worry about being tested for steroids and performance enhancing drugs this year.

    In fact, they never really have.

    And the number of offenders will continue to remain elusive.

    The Florida High School Athletic Association implemented a one-year pilot program for 2007-08 that tested 600 athletes at 43 schools across Florida, or about 1 percent of its student athletes. It had one positive result.

    The Legislature dropped the $100,000 funding for the program over the summer because of a budget shortfall.

    well there's better things to spend money on, like sports programs for kids gone wrong and such
