Canseco Held at the Border

José Canseco was detained by authorities for nine and a half hours Thursday after they found a small amount of human chorionic gonadotropin, a controlled substance, in his possession as he tried to enter the United States from Mexico, his lawyer said Friday.

Greg Emerson, the lawyer, said Canseco was freed after he consented to a search of his California home. Emerson said federal agents searched the home Friday and did not find any banned substances. H.C.G., which is used to stimulate testosterone after a person cycles off steroids, can be obtained legally with a prescription. Emerson said he did not know if Canseco, who has admitted using steroids, had obtained the drug legally.

Canseco’s detention was first reported by The Daily News on Friday.
