  • 15 Broward County Sheriff's deputies taken off patrol during steroids inquiry

By John Holland and Bob LaMendola | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
    February 26, 2009

Fifteen Broward Sheriff's deputies have been pulled off the street because of suspicion they used steroids, but they may not need to give up their old jobs for long, officials said Wednesday.

Agency policy allows deputies to take steroids and similar muscle-building drugs if they are prescribed by a licensed physician. That could protect the deputies no matter what their drug test results show in 10 days or so, an agency spokesman said.

Jim Leljedal, the spokesman, stressed it's too early to say whether the deputies even took the drugs, let alone whether they did so under doctor's orders.

"There's probably nothing we could do if that's the case," Leljedal said. "The policy indicates that if there is a legitimate doctor -patient relationship, and they were prescribed in that situation, then they would be allowed."

Maybe I'm the minority here, but I really don't see an issue with cops using AS. Just IMHO though.

Other than the minor detail of people who are supposed to uphold the law breaking them (assuming they are found to have procured the drugs illegally).

yes and those who uphold the law must deal with people who don't WANT to be held to the law. so do we leave our lawmen unprepared as to the criminal?

Two different arguments here. Let me clarify, I think it should be legal for law enforcement to use AS, not for them to break the law. While I am sympathetic to their predicament, if found to be guilty they should be punished. I'll hope for a light sentence.

Those who are sworn to uphold the law need to follow the laws they are sworn to uphold. That's what a society of laws is all about. Are you suggesting that the police are free to break the law whenever they choose, just because not every citizen is law abiding?

i started to write an answer but I will just say no I didn't suggest that they can go around breaking laws left and right....that is not a logical counterpoint to what I said, just an exaggeration. I was making the point just like we give the police bigger guns to deal with the higher level of the criminal element, we should treat their bodies as weapons as well if they so choose to make them superior to the scum they deal with. are they illegal to use yes, should we care about law enforcement using NO. should the law be changed for everyone as well YES.
