  • Let's make steroids legal already!

I know this is going to upset a lot of people out there but I think someone needs to make a case for the other side. Baseball and sports in general have been getting a lot of heat recently because of the steroid scandals. There are those out there who call it cheating and gaining an unfair advantage on those who don't do it. The question does does arise at what do we really call an unfair advantage. Is it cheating when Tiger Woods gets laser surgery on his eyes and gets better than 20/20 vision? Is it an unfair advantage when high school athletes get better nutrition and training then other athletes in less fortunate income brackets? What about those of us born without superior genes and abilities?

So what if an average athlete does steroids in order to compete on a higher level. He couldn't have done it without the drugs and it's his choice and risk. The drugs are just leveling the field. They are making things fair now. Steroids are used medically for wasting disorders, burns and hormone replacement after surgery. They are therapeutic and beneficial to many. If they are taken under a doctors supervision and care they can be used safely and effectively. Problems arise when these substances are bought on the black market and used without a doctors supervision. If we allow their use for athletes and bodybuilders we will saving lives and preventing health problems for millions of users who otherwise would be doing it on their own.

I can hear the screams from those out there saying that athletes need to be role models and shouldn't be taking steroids. I say they are a bunch of grown men playing kids games. Police officers, rescue workers and our military men and women are role models. Let's get that straight. Athletes are not role models. They are business men in it for themselves and the money. Along those lines if they want to take steroids to gain an advantage in their business then let them.

I personally have never used steroids because I never needed to. I never competed in bodybuilding or pro athletics. If I ever dreamed of those endeavors and the only way I could get there was with steroids would I do them. Hell yeah! A multi-million dollar contract. Playing a game I loved. Tough choice. Now give them a break and let's get real about what a real hero is and what a business man is.

If Tiger Woods wants to start a cycle of Sustanon then by all means let him. I'm tired of looking at that string bean body of his anyway.

The con side is the trickle down effect. They allow pro athletes to use , then when do college kids start using to gain an edge to get in the pros... how long until high school kids start using to get an edge to a great athletic program...

I have thought the same thing; yeah legalize steriods. But, from a realistic view how would you do it?

You know people would run in buying test up like a kid in a candy store, then what to do with all the irresponsible people throwing needles all over the place?

      This would be my plan:

Model it like a gun license/doe permit; Make them still be illegal unless you take a 1 month class day or nite at local areas, and a price expensive enough to make most casual people not find it worth it. Make it available for people 21 and older to keep it outta college for the most part, and make it a large fine if you are caught disposing of needles improperly such as permanent loss of steriods license and a large monetary fine. Also, have a certain amount of permits people are issued yearly to buy.

Then there is the whole subject of substances to legalize..... I feel thats the main problem.

Yes and some sports docs would no doubt specialize in this area.
The USOC doctor who was in charge of drug testing for the Atlanta Olympics. Has his practice in my town, a doctor that I know well asked him how many athletes who were using a banned substance passed the Olympic drug testing, his reply: 99%.
