  • Great use of taxpayer money.

Recently the gov't spent 6 million testing 10k high school athletes in Texas for anabolic steroids, they found 2 positives after 10k tests, they wanted to keep testing, the gov. of Texas ordered the testing stopped. Wonder how many postives of rec drugs they would have gotten, especially if gang bangers were among thos tested.

2008-09 UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Report

The UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Report for the fall of 2008 has been released by the UIL. The statistical report of the testing program that took place between September 2008 and December 2008 includes information such as the total number of tests conducted, the number of positive results and the breakdown of student-athletes tested by sport and gender.

Of the 18,817 tests conducted, there were seven (7) confirmed positive results and ten (10) unresolved test results. The ten unresolved results were reported from the laboratory with Testosterone: Epitestosterone (T:E) ratios greater than 6:1. Follow-up tests are being conducted on the ten unresolved cases. Once the follow-up tests are completed, the final results of those tests will be reported as either positive or negative.

For Testosterone, the definition of positive depends on an adverse analytical finding (positive result) based on the methods listed in the UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Program Protocol which shows that the Testosterone is of exogenous origin, or if the ratio of the total concentration of Testosterone to that of Epitestosterone (T:E) in the urine is greater than 6:1, unless there is evidence that this ratio is due to a physiological or pathological condition.

Additionally, there were forty-eight (48) protocol positive results. These protocol positive results occurred as violations of the UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Program Protocol. Forty-three (43) of these violations were the result of unexcused absences, five (5) were due to refusal of the student-athlete to participate in the collection process.

Of the 334 schools where tests were conducted, 12,159 boys were tested representing 10 sports and 6,658 girls were tested representing 12 sports. The sports with the most student-athletes tested were football for males (4,535) and volleyball for females (1,089). The total number of student-athletes tested for each sport, includes multiple sport participants. Therefore, the individual sport numbers will differ from the total number of athletes tested. Overall, there were 6,083 freshmen student-athletes tested, the most of any grade level.

48 protocol positives - those were probably all postives too, they just didn't want to test.
