Two Polk County police officers are under investigation for alleged illegal steroid use. Officer Cates and Garrett are currently are currently on administrative leave pending an investigation.
Steroid sales and use is an ever increasing illegal drug trade.
We are all familiar with the tragedy of Chris Benoit and his family. The high profile case was most certainly an example of the dangers of steroid use. It is also a reason that I am very angered when suspects such as Richard Thomas, of Lakeland, Fla. are released to live with a parent under an agreement to forfeit $25,000 if he flees prosecution or fails to appear for a court hearing. The affidavit stated that during the search and after Thomas was read his rights, he told agents he would "beat any charges like he had in the past," and that "the only thing he knows is selling steroids." Thomas" wife, Sandra, $215,000 bail and is not facing federal charges.
I applaud the efforts of the Polk County Sheriff’s Undercover Narcotics detectives for the arrest of Richard and Sandra Thomas. Their efforts shut down a major supplier of anabolic steroids. On the same note, I am appalled by U.S. Magistrate Thomas Wilson and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelley Howard-Allen for agreeing to a such lenient release agreement for Thomas, especially given the fact that Thomas' wife, Susan is not facing federal charges and her bail was much higher.
In January of 2006, Daniel Olon Wood, also of Lakeland, Fla. was arrested after beating a 3 year old child for crying. Wood claimed that the anabolic steroids he used to build muscles, triggered a rage that made him hurt the girl. According to investigators, Wood picked the girl up by her neck and slammed her 30-pound body headfirst against a wall at their home. Wood also punched her in the head and backhanded her across the face.
