HGH Side Effects in Adults

Feb 4, 2011 | By Carole Anne Tomlinson
When your body's pituitary gland cannot produce enough human growth hormone (HGH), you need to receive supplement treatments to make up for the deficit of hormone. Growth hormone also helps in the manufacture of your body's hormone cortisol, which you need in order to live, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease reports. Some people also use HGH to build muscle, but medical professionals do not recommend it for this use. HGH may produce side effects.
Headaches
Headaches may occur as your body adjusts to the hormonal changes induced by HGH therapy, Drugs.com reports. Your headaches may range from slight to moderate, but should not occur in severe form. You should rest while your body adjusts to this growth hormone supplement. While your headaches should cease on their own, query your doctor if they persist.

Flu-like Symptoms
Your body may ache and you may feel warm as if you have an increased body temperature with the use of HGH, Drugs.com indicates. You also may have cold symptoms, such as a cough and stuffy nose. If your symptoms do not go away in a few days, call your doctor for advice, as you may need medical treatment.
Trouble Sleeping
If you use HGH as a supplement, you may have trouble sleeping and you may feel wide-awake at nighttime. Insomnia typically occurs when you start your use of HGH, but should recede and end without medical intervention.
Bleeding Gums
Your gums may bleed when you take growth hormones. Report this side effect to your doctor because a change in your blood thinning abilities may occur. Bleeding gums means your blood has thinned and is not clotting as quickly as it was prior to taking the growth hormone. This can indicate a serious problem.
Dizziness
Dizziness could occur as you become used to the HGH. You may feel light-headed walking or when changing body positions. It may throw off your balance and cause injuries through falling or stumbling. Report dizziness to your physician for an evaluation, because it could indicate other health issues.
Muscle Pain
Muscle pain may occur as a result of the hormone replacement. Your muscles may hurt for no apparent reason. You should warm-pack them or take warm, soothing baths as your body adjusts to the growth hormone supplement.
Burning Sensations
Burning in your fingers may feel like frostbite has occurred. Your fingers may start to burn and feel uncomfortable. You should call your doctor and get help for this painful health side effect to the growth hormone supplement.
