Stephan Bonnar was on steroids at UFC 153 – and he still couldn’t even mount a challenge against Anderson Silva.
Bonnar failed a drug test following the Oct. 13 card, according to MMAjunkie.com. He tested positive for drostanolone, an anabolic steroid. Silva, the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, beat Bonnar via TKO in the first round with a vicious knee to the chest. Bonnar had never been knocked out before.
UFC officials confirmed to the website that Bonnar and co-main event fighter Dave Herman, who lost to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, both failed drug tests. Herman tested positive for marijuana metabolites. Both men are facing suspensions, according to UFC executive Marc Ratner. Because the event was in Brazil where there is no athletic commission, the company arranged the tests itself.
Bonnar announced his retirement earlier this week. This isn’t his first time getting caught taking performance-enhancing drugs, either. His first positive test and suspension came after UFC 62 on Aug. 26, 2006 when he lost to Forrest Griffin by unanimous decision. Bonnar tested positive for a Boldenone metabolite that resulted from anabolic steroid use at the time.
The remaining 22 fighters on the card tested negative for any drugs of abuse or performance-enhancing substances.
That includes Silva, who dominated Bonnar so thoroughly that he put himself up against the cage, taunting his opponent to clinch with him. When he seemingly got bored of toying with Bonnar, Silva tripped him and pounced with a pinpoint knee to the chest. Bonnar dropped and curled into the fetal position. Silva finished with punches on the ground.
Given that Bonnar was on some pretty heavy juice during that fight, it makes Silva’s win becomes even more impressive. As for Bonnar, it tarnishes his fan-favorite persona, especially considering this isn’t the first time.
