UFC Jose Aldo Lost Because He Stopped Using Steroids According to Joe Rogan and Brendan Schaub
UFC featherweight Jose Aldo was undefeated for 10 years prior to fight with Conor McGregor at UFC 194. The streak ended when McGregor knocked him out in the first 13 seconds of the fight. Although the outcome wasn't necessarily surprising, the fact that it was over so quickly was a surprise. The Brazilian clearly did not put on a performance worthy of a 10-year champion. Why did Aldo go down so quickly?
Mixed martial art (MMA) commentator Joe Rogan and UFC veteran Brendan Schaub think they have a good idea what was going. Rogan and Schaub shared their thoughts on the fight during an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast posted this week.
Rogan had previously criticized Aldo with the observation that Aldo's physique looked “soft” and “deflated” especially when compared to previous fights in comments made prior to the UFC 194 main event. The audio clip of his comments was never intended for public consumption.
"He looks way different," Rogan said in the audio clip. "But it could be that he's done a lot of cardio. Don't want to jump to conclusions."
Clearly, Rogan was careful not to jump to the conclusion that Aldo had jumped OFF steroids as the reason for his softer and gentler appearance. Yet, when Rogan discussed the matter with Schaub, he continued to hint at steroids and imply that Aldo was a steroid user.
Specifically, Rogan referred to a frequently repeated story in which a drug testing officer with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) travelled to Aldo's gym in Brazil to collect a urine sample for anti-doping tests. Andre Pederneiras, the coach and trainer for Aldo, called the police to have the drug testing officer physically removed based on a questionable charge involving an invalid travel visa.
"The tried to test Aldo in camp, and Aldo's people had the cops pulled on these people, they wanted to get them kicked out of the country. They were trying to deport them out of the country," Rogan recounted the story. "Then when they finally did give them a urine sample, he tripped and spilled his piss. That's insane. I never tripped and spilled piss in my entire career, and I pissed in cups all the time."
Meanwhile, Schaub had enough of Rogan's tip-toeing around the topic. He decided to address it more directly – although he still avoid mentioning steroids – by suggesting the recent stepped-up steroid testing has deterred Aldo and everyone on his team from using steroids.
"You're batshit crazy if you don't think Jose Aldo's body looked different,” Schaub said. “You're batshit crazy if you think he's gonna fight the same. [...] His camp, I think, is 1-7, 0-8 since this drug testing came out. So you're talking about a different fighter man.”
Rogan and Schaub were apparently on the same page as the new UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. Prior to UFC 194, McGregor questioned the credibility of the UFC-USADA anti-doping testing that takes place in the home country of his opponent Aldo. McGregor didn't trust Brazilian drug testing officers to be above corruption.
And just like Rogan and Schaub did the following week, McGregor did not directly accuse Aldo of using steroids and/or performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) but only implied that Aldo could get away with using steroids in Brazil in spite of the UFC anti-doping policy.
All three – Rogan, Schaub and McGregor – seem so desperate to say one thing: Jose Aldo IS USING STEROIDS. However, they must be under direct orders of Dana White and the UFC to avoid making direct (and unsubstantiated) accusations.
