  • NFL Anabolic Steroid Questions For Terron Beckham

The New York Jets football team signed Terron Beckham to a 3-day tryout agreement to evaluate the for his potential in a career as a National Football League (NFL) player. The 23-year old Beckham is a long-shot. The New York City-based personal trainer showed a lot of potential but remains a long shot since he never played college football and hasn't played football since high school.

Beckham's physique and incredible physical talents are not the only things that have led to questions about anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). It is his connection to competitive bodybuilding and his participation in National Physique Committee (NPC) physique contests. Any personal trainer knows that steroid use is commonplace in commercial gyms. And any NPC competitor knows that steroid use is rampant in non-drug tested NPC men's bodybuilding and physique contests.

It's a question of guilty-by-association when it comes to Beckham's involvement with the world of bodybuilding. It may not be fair. And Beckham may be telling the truth. But the negative associations are unavoidable.

Beckham's competitive days in the NPC were brief. He only competed in a few contests. His greatest on-stage success was a first place victory in the Men's Physique Class C at the 2014 NPC New Jersey John Kemper Classic Championships. He also placed fourth in the Men's Physique Class D at the 2014 NPC Steve Stone Metropolitan Championships and 15th place in the Men's Physique Class D at the 2014 Team Universe.

Beckham never really liked the physique competitions. He never wanted to be a bodybuilder because he valued performance over appearance and never felt his best at more than 230 pounds.

“Competition days... #NPC ... I did #physique .. And was always told I was to big and to do bodybuilding,” Beckham said in an Instagram post. “Well I'm going to say this again, never wanted to do bodybuilding, never wanted to weight more then 230lbs, I don't like feeling heavy at all. I like to Perform... I honestly didn't want to do it anymore. I was feeling my body go through changes I didn't like, like being tight all the time, not feeling loose, low energy from dieting. It is a tough lifestyle, but it was great environment and glad I had a short experience.”

Beckham dismisses the steroid questions that have come his way since he started gaining attention pursuing his dream of an NFL career. Beckham told Dennis Waszak, Jr. of the Assoicated Press that he attributes his success to “hard work” and “great genetics”.

“It’s tough because I work so hard. I worked that hard all my life. And you can’t just change people’s minds,” Beckham said, via NJ.com. “If they feel like, ‘What you look like or what you do, you can’t do that without having whatever substances.’ It’s crazy. All I have to say is that I’m here, and they’ve done their tests or whatever. I’m cool. I’ve never had to do anything, and I’m fine.

“I have great genetics. I work hard. And that’s all I have to say about that.”
