  • WWE Star Jinder Mahal Denies Anabolic Steroid Use

WWE Smackdown pro wrestling star Jinder Mahal, whose real name is Yuvraj Singh "Raj" Dhesi, recently returned to the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) organization after two years on the independent circuit. The dramatic transformation of his physique has raised the specter of anabolic steroid use. A leaner, bigger and more muscular Jinder Mahal has had defend himself against the steroid accusations.

“The Maharaja” has over 67,000 followers on Instagram and many of them do not hesitate to call Mahal a steroid user. Every time Mahal posts a picture displaying his new-found muscularity, dozens of followers post comments accusing him of using steroids:

“Cough, cough, roids”; “Steroids Mahal”; “Get off the steroids”; “Son of steroids”; “Steroids all day long right?!”

Other Instagram followers point to an apparent case of gynecomastia (gyno) based on the “puffy nipples” that appear in some of the Instagram photos posted by Mahal:

“I see some gyno action bruh!”; “All I can focus on is the gyno”; “Nice gyno man!”; “Bro get some Nolvadex”.

Mahal is not hesitant to brag about his physique but he flatly dismisses the steroid accusations. Majal suggests that he is drug-free because he has never tested positive for anabolic steroids in drug tests administered under the WWE Talent Wellness Program. He’s passed multiple anti-doping tests since his return last year and he claimed to have passed every single test given to him over the six years he was signed under WWE.

“Anyone else on the roster have veins in their abs ??... And of course I'll get a hundred "steroid" or "wellness" comments .... I've been tested multiple times since coming back, and have never once in over 6 years with WWE had any issues. Follow my IG stories or my SnapChat and you can see that no one is out-training me, and no one is out-dieting me.”

Unfortunately, there are several reasons why the WWE testing program can not guarantee its entertainers do not use steroids. Steroid testing isn’t perfect and there have been numerous cases of professional athletes who have admitted using steroids even while passing all of their anti-doping tests with flying colors.

For example, professional cyclist Lance Armstrong regularly used the anabolic steroid testosterone and yet passed literally hundreds of drug tests. For this reason, a passed drug test does not conclusively prove that an athlete is steroid-free.

Secondly, the WWE steroid testing program is not an exhaustive and comprehensive anti-doping program like those used in real sports that have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC).

In addition, the WWE Talent Wellness policy only applies to full-time entertainers/employees. Those professional wrestlers who are designated as “part-time performers” are not required to participate in the Wellness Program. For example, part-time performers like Brock Lesnar and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson can use all the steroids they want.

The WWE does not explicitly prohibit Lesnar and Johnson from using steroids; does not drug test them; does not penalize them; and does not require them to comply with the Wellness Program. This does not necessarily mean they are using steroids. But why wouldn’t they.

Mahal can deny using steroids all he wants but using the WWE drug test results as proof is a failed strategy.
