  • Border Patrol Dogs Can Detect Anabolic Steroids

Police Dog Stopped Isaias Alejandro Gaytan-Jasso from Smuggling Personal Steroid Supply Across Texas Border

Isaias Alejandro Gaytan-Jasso, a 34-year old Mexican national with a valid entry visa for the United States, was arrested after he tried to bring a personal supply of anabolic steroids with him across the Texas border near Laredo.

Gaytan-Jasso had all of his travel documents in order when he approached the primary U.S. Border Patrol motorist checkpoint in a black Toyota Tundra. After the vehicle was scanned by license plate readers, Gaytan-Jasso was selected for closer scrutiny at a secondary inspection point.

Border Patrol agents at the secondary inspection points usually take the time to examine things like criminal history, employment status, tax status and travel patterns of the vehicle occupants. But Gaytan-Jasso only had to worry about the police dog.

Border Patrol Dog trained to detect anabolic steroids at Texas border crossings
The Border Patrol K-9 Unit had apparently been trained to imprint on the scent of anabolic steroids. The drug detection dog alerted agents to the possible presence of contraband hidden in the Toyota Tundra.

Border Patrol agents discovered a total of 66 grams of contraband. The contraband included at least two or three vials of injectable anabolic steroids identified as trenbolone and stanozolol (Winstrol). Additional pharmaceuticals included an injectable birth control for women (Diviltac), an over-the-counter cough suppressant (Tromefen) and an estrogen receptor blocker (tamoxifen).

Gaytan-Jasso was arrested and charged with possession of a Schedule III Controlled Substance (anabolic steroids). Border Patrol agents turned him over to deputies with the Webb Country Sheriff’s Office (WCSO).

WCSO deputies seized the personal supply of steroids. But more importantly, the steroid arrest gave deputies the authority to seize $24,682 in cash currency hidden in the Toyota Tundra.

The fate of Gaytan-Jasso remains uncertain. In the current political environment, it seems likely that he will have his travel visa revoked. With or without a conviction, Gaytan-Jasso will likely be deported. And the United States government will keep his money.

These dogs are getting very good. I seen they can train them to sniff out electronics device and things like flash drives and hard drives.
