Anabolic vs Androgenic
All anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone and have unique molecular structures which are similar to testosterone. Anabolic steroids are basically used to enhance the anabolic functions of testosterone while depressing the androgenic effects of it. However, none of these steroids can completely eliminate the androgenic effect; thus, they retain some androgenic potential. Because of that, anabolic steroids are often referred to as anabolic-androgenic steroids. The concept called ‘selective receptor binding’ is used to determine the anabolic-to-androgenic ratio of a particular steroid.
