Every May New York plays host to an invasion of ridiculously tanned freaks with cartoonish dimensions, making grandiose boasts, striking outrageous poses, as they strive to vanquish their peers so as to be recognized as number one in their field. But enough of the Donald Trump lookalike contest, the focus for Big Apple bodybuilding fans this weekend is the New York Pro being staged on Saturday May 21, by IFBB/NPC stalwarts Bev Francis and Steve Weinberger.
There are sixteen competitors this year and now its your chance your let us know (in above poll) your pick for the win and also give us your top three and why. In alphabetical order here’s a quick guide to the line-up
Pablo Ayala will bring monstrous size, and if he hits the conditioning button he will be a sight to see.
Jeff Beckham From preview pics Jeff has made offseason gains and with his outgoing personality and onstage presence he will impress judges and audience alike.
Dominick Cardone, the 2014 NPC Nationals champ, makes his pro debut less than three weeks after the passing of his dear mother after a long illness. (If you followed the story told by Dominick and his father Dominick Snr. on Facebook you would be in turn saddened and inspired by the courageous battle of Janine Cardone and the support of her family. May that valiant lady rest in peace.) Dominick is a tiger of a competitor and in dedicating his debut to his Mom he will not lack motivation.
Maxx Charles is a freak who continues to get freakier and improve. With his Jumbo jet width, small waist and 270 pound physique, plus improved legs, he’ll be in the fight for top placings.
Nathan De Asha from the UK who made his pro debut with an impressive second place at last week’s Bodypower hits the New York scene 26 years (My God! Is it that long ago?) after Dorian Yates caused a Big Apple furor. Nathan is a big guy with proportioned quality muscle and he will do well in this field.
Jon DeLaRosa is judging by his precontest pics set to unleash his best ever physique. With his great proportions and knockout arms Jon, in true contest condition, is driven to make major waves at this year’s NY Pro.
Dexter Jackson on the back of his 2015 Olympia runner-up status, reinforced by his resume of five Arnold Classics, starts as favorite. His total package can hardly be faulted and with a six months pause since his last contest he will be a formidable hurdle for anyone.
Michael Kefalianos when it comes to condition he will be right in there having seemed to reclaim his rock hard credentials with third place at last week’s Bodypower bash.
Steve Kuclo may be the revelation of the contest. Long lauded for his size, shape and proportions he’s always struggled for contest condition. But in precontest pics he’s harder and deeper separated than we’ve ever seen him. His peers have been warned.
Victor Martinez, who won the forerunner of the NY Pro, the Night of Champions in 2003, will be one closely watched as we learn whether he can rebuild on the return to form he showed last year.
Blair Mone makes his pro debut after a 13-year journey. He’s another guy who in pre contest pics seems certain to hit his best ever form, in terms of condition augmenting his mass.
Juan Morel, winner of this event last year, cannot be discounted as he consistently shows year to year improvement and his size and shape will play favorably against front runner Dexter Jackson.
Panexce Pierre the 2011 Team Universe overall champ, steps up to the open class after a stint in the 212s and may find size an obstacle.
Derek Upshaw, after finishing ninth in last year’s NY Pro he returns with a mission to substantially improve on that placing. He will be roared on by MD’s Ron Harris.
Keith Williams is another who has been busy in the offseason. The possessor of a mighty frame he’s streamlined his midsection and having stayed lean for the past two months is ready to present his best look.
Roelly Winklaar continued his 2015 renaissance with an emphatic win at last week’s Bodypower Pro. He has muscle bursting out of everywhere – including his cheekbones -- and if he has sharpened up in the last seven days he will be honing in on Dexter.
Brian Yersky is another giant whose precontest pics show improvement, particularly in that all important area of condition. If he retains that gnarly look he will receive close attention.
So that’s the sweet sixteen for the 2016 NY Pro. Now pick your winner and top three.
