You got them shots with all the light pollution of SoCal?

What kind of gear does it take to get shots of the moon that clear?

I drove about 20 miles into the Angeles National Forest to get far enough away from city lights to get the comet shot.

The moon shot was from my backyard.

Here is what my camera and lens look like. That's a 500mm lens with a extender and a crop camera. Total effect field of view equivalent to 1150mm.

              ---------------------------

Leica made this custom lens for Sheikh Saud Bin Mohammed Al-Thani of Qatar, at a price just topping $2 million. The world never found out exactly what the Saudi prince used it for, or why he needed a 1600mm focal length in the first place.

With a weight of 132 pounds, it’s no wonder the owner also bought a custom Mercedes to lug it around. Throw a 2x teleconverter on it and you’ve got 3200mm of close-up goodness. Al-Thani, arguably the most extreme gear addict of all time, unfortunately never released any sample images.
