^ This is the only sane way to deal with the drug problem. Decriminalize and overwhelm users with treatment and social support. Dealing can stay illegal but possession should be decriminalized. In America, we seem to be obsessed with throwing users into prison, which is the worst way to deal with the problem. Incarceration at least in this country is totally incompatible with rehabilitation of any sort.

I listened to a TED Talk on this as I have struggled with addiction before. This has been the western idea of handling drug dependency and addiction. We've always been taught that you belittle, degrade, and punish a user of any type and that will drive them to want to quit... I would compare this same sort of reasoning to me yelling and cursing at my 8 year old son, for striking out at the plate on baseball. It's crazy once you think about it....like my son already knows he missed and let himself and his team down. He definitely doesn't need me to come kick him when he's down also. I think with addiction, we've always heard and seen this method so we've just adapted it as standard which is very sad, but fortunately seems to be changing, thank God. Portugal also took a ton of the money allocated to their "war on drugs" and put that same money into healthy rehab programs for detoxing users, and paying employers half the salary of they would hire the person coming out of addiction. They've had huge success using this method. They took people who many of which, had no purpose in life and gave them a purpose and something for them to work at and be passionate about.
