I was watching the news tonight and I know this is an old news topic, but now more than ever they have been emphasizing the importance of how toxic it is to eat tuna fish now. It contains a high amount of Mercury and is now of one the items of food pregnant women are strongly suggested to stay away from. I'm curious to see how bad the toxins in tuna fish really are? As I eat a can of tuna fish every day I'm reluctant to continue if it really is this bad. What would be another quick and easy source of protein to replace it?

Re: Tuna containing Mercury
Canned salmon or chicken. The tastes of both vary greatly depending on the brand. I like the canned chicken from Costco the best. For the salmon, "Pink" is the brand I've found at Sam's Club and I can eat it right out of the can without adding any seasoning at all, but it does smell pretty strong and Stromba won't let me eat it if I'm with him.Originally posted by TrippersGirl

MrsP, did you try the Costco salmon? I get that about every other week, and it's really mild and tastes pretty good. Don't be fooled by the smell (it's a little strong); the flavor and taste is quite mild. I rinse the Costco canned chicken very thoroughly, has too much sodium in the broth for my taste.Originally posted by MrsPuddlesFL

O/T - Casual Gourmet Lobster Bisque is very tasty, almost like what I make at home (we're talking fish bones, shells, the whole fish stock from scratch thing), maybe a little more buttery tasting than mine. It would benefit from more lobster meat (of course), but all-in-all pretty darn good.
I only had a tablespoon (I think it probably has a 1,000 calories from the way it tastes), my kids and wife love fish, so that was their dinner along with a salad and a loaf of bakery pumpernickel bread.

i think if you're going to try staying away from tuna b/c of the mercury content, you should also be avoiding the salmon. salmon will retain mercury similar to the tuna b/c of the fatty deposits you have in salmon (all those nice omega 3's).
i think essentially, the warning means - no tuna every day (or salmon or any other large fish which will gather mercury present in the water - that's why chunk light is better than albacore b/c it's the smaller tuna fishes in chunk and therefore less time for the fish to grow and to collect mercury).
you might have to resort to canned chicken or just lots of grilled chicken breasts cut into strips. costco even has precooked chicken strips you can buy too.

I eat sardines. I agree any large fish contain large amounts of mercury and should be avoided. Salomon is not to bad unless it is farmed then it contains dangerous levels of pcps. This was recently reported by the FDA and EPA. I think the EPA has numbers on their site.

That's the Tyson chicken, isn't it? Pretty tasty, but again really high in sodium for my taste (I buy this stuff about every other week)Originally posted by sana

Sana, is the farm raised salmon any different? My guess is it should be much less in mercury because they are fed pellets, rather than eat other fish containing mecury building up in the fishes meat. I think the Costco stuff is not farm raised, should say on the label if it is.

Can't win for losing these days.

I eat mostly chicken and beef and reserve the canned stuff for when I'm lazy or just out of home cooked protein. I've only got one can of Pink salmon left so next time I'm in Costco I'll give their brand a try. I agree, the canned stuff has way too much sodium but in a pinch it'll do.
I didn't know fresh water fish like salmon had the mercury problem too. Grrrrrrrrr!
How's grouper holding up with mercury levels? Sam's or Costco has individually frozen grouper fillets that are really convenient to defrost and cook quickly.
