  • Parents getting a divorce

How many of you still have parents that are together?
If your parent are split up how old were you when it happened and how did you handle it?
I got a call from my mom yesterday telling me she is going to leave my father. Now this was not big surprise to me. I’ve seen the writing on the wall for years. I really surprised they stayed together for almost 30 years. What did surprise me is how I took it.
I was really upset yesterday. I lost my appetite I could get my head in to my work out and ended up just quitting. Like I said I wasn’t surprised with the fact that they are splitting up but the fact that it is actually going to happened really got to me. I mean nobody wants to hear that his or her family is going to break up. I guess the good thing is the fact that all the kids are gone now. Hell I haven’t lived at home for over 10 years. My younger sister has been gone for a while and has 2 kids of her own, and my youngest sister just moved away to go to collage.
OTOH maybe that’s why it so hard. September would have been 30 years and now it’s all ending.

I know this was long but I needed to talk to someone.

It's hard to see your parents split up. I think like in your situation, since they've stuck together this long, 30 yrs., it's even harder. You need to try to see it from their point of view. They're not happy together so why keep beating a dead horse. They're still young enough to start over, to find someone new, they will want to live out their older years more happily. You kids really need to step up to the plate now and be supportive of their decision to begin new lives. They were very young when they got married, but they did stick it out until all of the children were grown...that in itself is an amazing task.

Hang in there and if you need to talk you know where we are.

I totally support my mother’s decision. I’d rather her be happy apart than miserable and stay together. I didn’t even let her know it upset me. But that doesn’t make it easier. You’re right they are young still hell my mom is only 44 and my dad turns 47 in a few months. It’s just hitting me a bit harder than I thought it would.

Sorry to hear that bro, If ya wanna talk call me on my cell.

There was a time I thought my parents would divorce, but they now choose just to scream and curse at each other like the Brooklyn Italians that they are.

My parents were together, but I know how you feel, it's a very emotional time. My wife is divorcing me, I have those same feelings of remorse, of loss. MrsP has it right, be supportive. I am afraid sometimes that my kids will hold this against me. It's hard to see the change take place, change in itself is always very uncomfortable and unsettling until you can fit the new pieces together.

I'm sorry for you, take a deep breath, things will get better a little at a time.

Sorry bro...BUt it really isn't as big a deal anymore...I was
20 when my parents broke up...I knew it was coming...It
sounds like they waited until you and your sisters were
older, which was a damn nice thing to do...You should
love them both and not choose a side...Never make a big deal
out of it at holidays or it will just make them feel bad...Your
parents love you a lot, but they had to do it...Good Luck
with it....Unfortunately its a big part of life now...Over
            50% get a divorce...
