Drug manufacturers have killed thousands of people over the years . before you get all bent over the FDA remember there in existence to protect you from being poisoned by something you believe to be helpful to you. I work with medical gasses and I know quite a bit about FDA regulations. You should be grateful that there is somebody making sure that what you buy isn’t going to kill you.

You could just as easily have a private company (Third-Party Certification) that has strict regulations that the companies reputation is based on to standardize products. This would keep the government from banning a particular substance that you like (ephedra) or an experimental drug to treat an incurable disease because the risk is to great.

We don't need the FDA, it's just a waste of money. The more responsibilty you give the government, the more dependant the public comes and before long they don't believe they are responsible for anything. It's always someone elses fault, being fat, dying of lung cancer after smoking for 50 years.
