Hero is what I remember it being called when I grew up.
At home we just say a sammich on fresh semolina, made only with Boars Head.
When I moved to FL from NY and I'd ask for a roast beef hero with mayo they immediately knew I was from the north, they normally use mustard down here.
My favorite hero: soft semoline bread, very thinly sliced roast beef (so thinly sliced it starts to fall apart), horseradish cheddar, shreaded lettuce, thin sliced ripe tomatoes, a little bit of paper thin sliced purple onion, salt and pepper on the meat, mayo on both sides of the breat, balsamic vinnigar on the veggies. Mmmmmm...that's my perfect cheat meal.
Sandwich most of the time. I think the only time I call it a Sub, is when I actually got if from subway. But I then still call it a sandwich most of the time.
