2nd round of playoffs started without first being over yet

I just realized it yesterday, the heat and hornets are still in the first series and the second round has already started. Does this always happen and maybe I just didn't notice or is it because the NBA got greedy by making the first round the best of seven

Huh, never noticed. Well it's nice to see the Lakers start the second round off with a loss though.
