I have owned many vehicles in the past, both new and used, foriegn and domestic. I looked at a ton of different new car options and actually purchased a new 2004 Hyundai Elantra at a very reasonable $13,500. It currently has the best warranty in the business, asthetically pleasing to the eye, comes standard with power options, cheap to insure and has a HUGE trunk. It gets great gas mileage and has a nice road handling feel. Powerband is pretty nice too when you need to pass someone, you can without worrying if you'll make it.

My mother owned 2 Hyundais and had very little trouble with the first and none with her current one. I really feel good about my purchase. The best part- the car will be paid off BEFORE the warranty expires. I started out looking at "American made" vehicles (there is no such thing anymore) and was very disappointed in the features/cost/warranty department. Standard 3 years/36,000 miles SUCKS. That was certainly a heavy factor in elimnating those models from my consideration.

Buy what suits your needs and meets your financial limitations, not exceeds them.
