  • jobs and their salaries?

iv been trying to look for a good website or book that can give information about jobs, CANADIAN jobs. im mostly interested in job salaries.

i just cant seem to find a definitive source for the money u can earn hourly or yearly.

or just anyone knowledgeble in trades can tell me whats the highest paying trade?

im gonna start a mechanic apprentiship soon and all i hear is how great the money is for plumbing, and im interested.

i can only get word of mouth for most salaries and most of the time they vary ALOT lol

anyways thats about thanks for reading :D

I don't know about Canada but in the US, I believe the top paying skilled trade (union) are electricians. It may be second though to the millwrights, not sure. If looking for a skilled trade to get into, I'd suggest that you try not to get into a small niche type trade (eg., elevator installers) because when work's plentiful all is fine but if the demand for such a specialized trade is low it can really suck. That's why stuff like electricians, plumbers, carpenters is a good bet for many.

    **EDIT**

Possibly aircraft mechanics is one of the top paid skilled trades jobs but again, the industry can be quite shaky, as evidenced after the 9/11 attacks.

Is it union? I am not sure what the going rate in canada is and how much work is avaliable but if you are in a union usually you do really well as long as you are willing to work. The normal scale for most around me start around $20 and up.

Yup, my father was an aircraft mechanic in the air force. He had a job lined up for after retirement with San Francisco Airport with a six figure salary. Once 9/11 happened, that job fell through the cracks. There's not even a demand for engineers right now either. Diesel mechanics is on the rise right now.

For electricians, it all depends what area of electrical you want to be in. I do automation, and it pays electricians about 25 to 35$ an hour depending if you have programming experience.
House wiring about 20 to 25$ an hour,
Industrial Maint. work about 24 to 28 an hour. Depending on the company.
And if your a contractor, it could all be higher.

thanks everyone for the advice, sunkiss i thought the pay was alot higher for electricians?

most ppl tell me that they make well over 100,000 a year

is that incorrect? or does it all depend on where you work etc?

With all the over-time, and all the holidays missed working our asses off. Yup. Its easy to make 75'gs but 100, he must work in a really good place. That or is a contractor which knows more then just basic electrical.

top pay for a union residential electrician is 32-33 in illinois. not sure but i imagine linemen may make more. the benefit of residential would be your side jobs. plumbers make pretty high wages high 20s to mid 30s. carpenters make a decent wage. they all pay well but the thing about say an electrician are the layoffs. i actually know a few that aren't doing electrical work right now because it's slow.

Ughm. Most electricians I know, have 3 years college under their belt. Along with programming courses. I took 3 years of Electrical engineering technician/technologist. And a few programming and Plc courses. Pretty much all the electricians I know have done the same, it isn't joke field you have to know what your doing.

Are you trying to choose a field because of the pay, or because thats what you want to do and your good at it?
