Depends on your personality. If you're anything like me, then it's a bad move; I'd be hard-pressed to get through basic training without grabbing a loud-mouthed instructor by the throat. But if you're even-keeled, and don't mind taking orders...it could be a good choice (training, looks good on a resume when you decide to leave, ect.).

As a veteran of the Marines, I can tell you it can be rewarding and frusterating at the same time. Its not so much the taking orders that makes it difficult...they pretty much condition you to do that in basic training, it is the mindless and idiotic methods of doing things. Many things are done quickly just so you can hurry up and wait to do another.
Granted, some people have fun in the Marines...quite frankly the biggest factor that determines how good of a time you have is strictly dependant on the unit where you go. If the unit is run effectively and keeps everything organized an effecient, then you will enjoy it much more. But unfortunately most units are run by those who really dont care, and it is horrible.
No ones choice but yours...just try to understand what your getting into.

I have high respect of the military. But i believe if anyone is going to school should stick to that unless you have no direction in life and you get into trouble alot. Otherwise i would put the idea of the military on the back burner. Cause you can go out and find any job that'll pay more than the military. And Marines (No offense) are worst about putting you in a for however many years then you come out not learning any skills except to fire a machine gun and that doesn't do shit for you in the real world. So then when you come out of your 4yrs or so of Marines you still need direction and still don't know what to do with your life just as you were before you went in. Going into the military doesn't solve any problems. I've seen several of my friends go into the military. And all most al of them just gave up to easy then signed a paper to the military to instate them for however many years thinking that the military will give them a life. And the ones that are marines usually end up being truck drivers when they get out.
If i was you i would stick to school, get a good education. Cause a good degree will make more than any part of the military will. And i wasn't trying to step on anyones toes. I was just stating some cold hard truth for the boy to think on.

I was in the marines for six years bro. I enjoyed it but knew it would not be a career. I got to go places I would never see if I wasn't in but there is alot of bullshit to put up with. I don't regret going in but I don't recomend it to many people.

If you go into the marines, it will make things very hard for whoever you're dating or married to. Its not just the actual deployments, its the long hours, shitty pay, frequent moving, and uncertainty/short notice of when you're leaving, for how long, and when you'll be back. Not to mention it can be really tough on the people who care about you when you go some place dangerous.

that is called communism ;)Originally posted by blm9376
I was in the military for 4 years and it definitely had its ups and downs. I personally feel it should be mandatory for every male to spend a minimun of two years in the military upon graduating high school.
military is a personal choice. I wouldn't do it because I don't work well with others. I like completing tasks on my own so I can have the credit. I don't know what that makes me. I have had friends go in and they are pretty sucessful at what they do. a lot are in law-enforcement..

WRONG!! That is not communism, it may be excessive government control in some peoples eyes, but it is not communism. ;) I honestly feel if kids were made to serve a minimum amount of time in the military, they would appreciate what they have a hell of a lot more after they saw what other nations do not. It teaches discipline, leadership, organization, team work (you may want to check this out...lol), and overall professionalism. I don't expect a lot of people to agree w/me, but I stand firm on this belief. ;)Originally posted by stonecold54

If that is the way you want to look at it. I think it is a way to a more productive youth. Unfortunately, a lot of kids don't have the superior upbringing that you did. I am 27 now, I was in the Army 4yrs, and the workforce for 2 upon getting out. I can say with all honesty that the people that have military experience (that I have worked with or had work for me) are generally more productive. There is a reason that "military" on your resume is so highly regarded. It is not some gov. conspiracy, it is because of the things I have stated as well as real world experience. I am now in school full time and the same thing applies, the majority of these kids would rather be partying and wasting there parents or governments money. However, the young adults that have spent a short time in the military have their own money to spend on school (courtesy of Uncle Sam) and now have the discipline to use it wisely.Originally posted by stonecold54
yes you are right. it is not communism but the road to it. :D
I learned most of what you stated from my parents.
