I'm pretty relaxed unless something suspicious like that is going on. In that case, I'm not going to sit there and die, I'm going down fighting!!! However, in that type of situation, you'd have to be sure that you had others on the plane to back you up, those terrorists are pretty slick! Makes me sick!

I fly weekly for biz, so I think about this often.

My main concern is around the emergency exits. What prevents someone from popping the emergency exit while flying over a major city?

Think about it in the context of this story. Several people in the front of the plane (emergency exit). Several people in the back (emergency exit). Two to pop the door, the others to hold back passengers, air marshalls, etc.

I might be wrong but there should be safeguards in place above a certain altitude and speed to prevent that. And if not the O2 masks would drop and you'd ride it out. Explosive decompression doesn't happen as easily as the movies make it out.

There are plenty of military aircraft that aren't pressurized or insulated at all at altitude. They make HAHO/HALO jumps from them all the time. Cold and loud as fuck.

              They're all strongman/powerlifting competitors.

Pretty fucking scary. I don't know what I would have done if that was me, my wife, and my 4 yr old son. I think I would have been getting into that bathroom and searching the shit out of it. One against 14, I would have likely gotten the shit beat out of me but I promise you, I would not make it easy. I would deal with the jury later.

I flew to Las Vegas a couple of months after 9/11, and that was pretty much the policy of the airline I flew on. My friend and I were seated right behind the cockpit doors...across the aisle were two other big dudes. Behind us, big dudes as well; they were intentionally seating guys who looked like they could kick some ass up at the front as a measure of added security. And, I gotta tell you...looking myself and the other 7 occupying the first two rows...there aren't 8 skinny little sand jockeys on the planet that could have hijacked that plane.

RIP Johnny P. I think I read that article. How they all got seated in the same row, and everyone was tripping out and how big they were. Weren't they on their way to the WSM in kuala lumpur?

That's my motto. I may not win, but i'll damn sure make you bleed.

Smuggling individual items aboard and making the IED in flight. The part that bothered me the most was the 4 Air Marshals on the flight did nothing at all. The reason was the men never interrupted the flight or crew. On 9/11 the terrorists said they just wanted the planes and no one would get hurt if they complied. I don't think they'll say anything the next time because no one would go for it now. They'll just blow the fucking plane and never say a word.

I'm afraid I would be in deep shit if I was on that flight. I think I at least would've got up and elbowed my way in line to see what the fuck they were leaving in the bathroom, if anything. And most likely if they were looking that squirrelly I would have stood up at some point and told them to sit down and piss your pants, no more bathroom for you Ahmed. I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6, ya know....

People don't always understand that you can't just wait these things out and let an air marshall take over the situation. For one thing, there may not be an Air Marshall onboard that flight. What do you do then? People need to trust in themselves to protect and control a dangerous situation because the time factor is critical to the survival of the passengers. If an Air Marshall identifies his/herself and controls the situation, then cool beans, otherwise all bets are off. There is power in numbers and usually the passengers will outnumber the terrorists.

There is an inherent problem with expecting someone else to handle the situation for you once it becomes unbearable; since there is no money for security due to the tax cuts while financing two ongoing wars overseas, the federal government has laid off over 400 air marshalls in the last 4 or 5 months. I've actually spoken with one outside of the airport setting and he said that there is a serious shortage of them and that there's no way that they could place one on every flight anyhow.

The other thing that people don't realize is that generally, an air marshall is located up front near first class- usually in the first 3 or 4 rows and on the aisle- to have unfettered access to the cockpit if necessary. There may be other air marshalls scattered throughout in coach on specific routes, but usually there are only two air marshalls (if any) on a designated flight. The terrorist needs only to identify this person, get close and blindside him or her to gain possession of their firearm and all kinds of shit can happen. This isn't quite as difficult as it sounds because of the stupid regulations that require Air Marshalls to wear a sport jacket, dress pants and shoes. They also have a certain hair length and clean facial features. All pilots should have the ability to train and carry firearms on board their flights.

I would have to assume that the federal agencies must have put these guys under surveillance to see where they go and who they talk to. These 14 Syrian guys were let go after background checks showed them to be free from any terrorist lists or known criminal activities. One important thing to note: these guys all had expired visas and apparently, no one detained them for it. I think it was somehow "missed" so that they could let these guys lead the authorities to others who may be involved with a potential hijacking attempt. I highly doubt that the feds would miss such a rudimentary detail. I think that they were let go but not let off the hook- at least I hope not.

You know what the funny thing is? That Flight was a Northwest Airlines flight and my dad works for them. And all the time he tells me how much of a joke this airline is. And I believe all the words he says. I even experienced how they operated their flights from Houston to Memphis and Memphis to Montego Bay. And they're just too laid back on security. And I like what my dad calls it all the time. He calls it Northworst.

I live in Maine close to where the terrorists came through on their way to N.Y. A few days before 9/11 my dad was stopped on the interstate at a roadblock and asked if he was a citizen... The powers that be seem to think we have no right to know what they know.
